Can you really be a hippie if you haven't taken acid?

Ok, this is probably a dumb question, but I've always considered myself to be a bit of a hippie, and I've never done acid. I've thought about doing it, not because I really want to, but because it seems it will expand my "hippyish" beliefs. Do you think if I never take acid I will still be a hippie? Again, dumb, but, yeah.

labels suck. they divide people rather than bring them together.

 

Just get a couple of Grateful dead tattoos, grow some dreadlocks, and call yourself 'family' and you should be fine.

Also make sure to always smile when your friends are watching you and get hemp necklace with a glass jar woven into it. You can download pre approved hippie playlists from certain websites. Don't screw this up, if someone finds a Cure or techno cd in your collection, that may ruin your credibility as a proper hippie.

Also, find out which candidates other 'hippies' in your area are endorsing for various elections and get some stickers or something to show that you're a supporter. It's not necessary to actually learn the platform of these polititians because you can always roll your eyes and sigh mumbling something about fascists as you walk away from anyone who challenges your beliefs.

Good luck hippie, with a little luck, you may turn out the social equivalent of our huffer friend, all enlightened and articulate &tc.

Dont worry about being judged by anyone, only your opinion of yourself should matter. If you dont feel like you really want to it, in other words have no honest interest, then its best you avoid it because LSD is not about becoming a certain single lable it is about breaking through all of the false concepts of personality which we apply to ourselves.
Just be happy with you are, dont feel pressured into trying anything that makes you uncomfortalbe!

I would say being a hippie is more of a mindset, not what you do, say, wear, etc. I certainly don't look the part but I would just more or less call myself open minded with a zest for life, Thats it, wanna call me a hippie thats fine, or don't, thats cool too.

LSD does seem to break down some of the personal barriers to being truely open minded tho, but certainly not necessary.

abstaining from lsd is also a very cool decision. and absolutely... you can be a hippy even if you don't take acid. hippy's are all about love and freedom anyway.

 

Why would you want to be a hippy anymore? It is now just a social clique that only cares about getting 'fucked up'. It is just as commercialized as the preps or the punks or any other modern social clique out there. The hippy movement and the punk movement both had good roots, but when the mainstream jumped in it all crumbled. How can you be a part of a counterculture if you are conforming by joining it? Do your own thing and don't worry about anyone else. If you do this other's will flock to you in a way remarkably similar to moths after a lantern.

Uuuhhhh, I believe you are all wrong. A hippie is a person who was of the teen age between 1962 and 1969, who was politically active, who enjoyed garage band music and liberal fashion and was generally, 'hip.' Acid was definitely a big part of that, but so was what was going on in the nation at the time. you are not a hippy because you have dreads, or because you drive a hippy van. You simply conform to an expired counterculture. Hippies are old now, they were the ones doing what we are doing now. No one will ever be a hippy again, that ship has sailed. But there will always be hip, and LSD is definitely hip. If you dont want to take acid, then you wont be hip in that respect, but thats cool, youre probably hip in other ways. dont let your culture define you, because that would make you unhip.

 

You're talking about what hippies WERE. We're talking about what hippies ARE. The term and the meaning behind it has changed over the years. But nobody has come up with a better term for the 20,000 that I attend festivals with every year. We're still called hippies.

 

I want to go to a festival this year, sounds like a lot of fun.
