so is anyone here more into waterway camping and livin out of thier boat paddling along rivers and what not? or anyone do any racing? im hoping to get out to illinois this spring for the fox river canoe race.
Man, it's like a dream of mine, to have a kayak and just roam the waterways. It'd be cool to ride the entire Mississippi, and all the way through the Great Lakes to the Atlantic. But I really am fascinated by the notion of waterway-camping, just beaching your kayak somewhere and pitching a tent. Beautiful... As it is now, though, I've never done it. Camped by some lakes and rivers, but not on a kayak/canoe, always at established campsites.
Most of my trips are on kayak/canoe. I just love it. Everything looks so beautiful and peaceful from the water, and the physical exercise is great. I plan on buying a Taimen (Russian "folding" kayak) this summer.
Oh yes, I've done a fair bit of canoe camping. Mostly in Maine, some in Canada, the Okefenokee once, weekends in the Pine Barrens in New Jersey or along the Delaware, some lakes in Vermont--it adds up! There's a picture in my gallery of Mt Katahdin taken from a boat on the Penobscot River one evening, on a trip there with friends. Edited to add (after looking at the message) "See my signature!"
i love canoeing..... i've canoed the mississippi a couple times with my friends.... not the whole thing obviously.... funny thing is i cant swim..... but i make sure im always wearing my vest... i gotta learn to swim so i can go kayaking when no one else wants to go canoeing
I have campd out of my canoe countless times. Mostly in Nebraska and Missouri. If you ever get a chance Travel around the Lake of the Ozarks, it can take as long as you want it to, lots of jumping cliffs, excellent fishing and beautiful scenery.
Since I moved to Fla, I've been doing a lot of kayaking in both the surf and swamps out here. Often there's nobody to go along and tho I don't recommend the notion, I end up going alone most often. Sandbar camping is pretty kewl.
TrippinBTM, I'm really flattered! I put up another picture, of one of my friends in our campsite, the morning after I took the Katahdin picture. It was fully dark by the time we got to the campsite: we cruised in blind, using a GPS receiver!
ive done allot of camping out of my kayak, mostly 3 day trips and a couple week long trips.this year i hope to make it down the missippi from iowa to the gulf.my wife and i are excited.love
Does anyone have any tips as to buying a Kayak for a beginner? What accessories do you need and how much should you be paying?
I think that $1000 is the approximate price you should be paying, and you'd need a paddle, a skirt-like thing that keeps water out of the boat and a helmet if you'll be doing whitewater kayaking. Being the Russian that I am, I'd advise buying the traditional boat of my people: the folding kayak. But that is only if you have enough patience to assemble and disassemble it before and after each trip (~1 hour)
Are you talking about a whitewater playboat or a boat for coastal cruising? Or a sit-on-top model for casual recreation? There are a lot of kinds and no single one can do everything.
you can pick up a cheap kayak for about £150 if your lucky. I got a gorgeous pyrana thing yummy....see my gallery
