Chat?

I'm an old hippie. I entered the Chat Room and found these incredibly young persons saying incredibly ridiculous things. Is there a time when those of us who know better chat? Or...what?

 

I don't go to the chat section for that reason. The threads do fine for me; that way, I can find a topic that interests me, and steer clear of the ones that don't. I find that the younger group, under 30, have absolutely no idea what we felt, experienced, believed in, etc. during our times in the '60s (at least, that was MY time).

 

Know better about what exactly?

 

to be quite honest.... we had an older and quite fantastic crowd in chat at one time.... but as they have w/ you, many of the younger crowd have driven most of them away. I know I for one... even being a chat mod... sometimes refuse to step foot in the door because of some of the nonsense in there. Some of us may be of a younger generation.. but don't discount all of us... there is a handful of really intelligent,mature, and awesome people that I have known for years and have grown to love as family.... sadly though... it is the summer months... and all the young'uns are out in full force w/ no school to worry about. I hope you make an appearance there again when a better crown is around... it's not totally a bad place, but like anything else... a few bad eggs ruins it for some.

 

What Court said. I was a regular for many years, but lately find that I can't relate with it anymore since most of the regulars are gone (and missed!!). I still enter here and there in hopes and sometimes find myself with a smile, like the old days, but mostly just find myself bored.

Oh yeah, and summer always makes it worse with all the kiddos out of school...

 

I hardly ever go in because maybe it's my screen name but the moment I log in people stop talking, and check out my profile. I guess they think they can't talk about sex and dope in front of a man of god. Fuck 'em I'm gonna go light a dube.

But anyway I've taken part in some decent chats and some inane bullshit. I could easily spend hours on the boards. I think the reasons I perfer the forums are because I type slow, and I like to take my time and choose my words carefully.

Thanks guys. At least most of you... I have two kids, Court - 18 & 21 - who are the awesome types, but we prefer to talk face to face. lol. This is the problem with the internet - anyone can use it! And they do! It's just that I ran into a girl yesterday who said she was 15 years old and was going to take acid. Which really grabbed the mother in me. I'm here to relate to other people, but it's hard not to encounter a 15 year old like that and not want to smack her upside the head. It seems that a lot of today's youth grab onto the name "hippie" (or "hippy") simply because they take drugs, when there is so much more to it. Don't mean to be arrogant (although I can be), but I'd just like to meet some new people who call themselves hippies for the same reasons I do. Nice to meet you all.

But I do agree, I think teenagers using serious drugs like that is depressing as fuck. I made an entire thread about it called "Why young teens shouldn't trip"

You don't have to lump everyone of a certain age into a single mentality. That's just ignorance.

 

yeah, it used to be a great place to chat... but now it's just grim

i don't understand why there are 15 yr olds in the chat.... when the age for the forums is supposed to be 16+

 

There are so many forums on this site and some great older posters. Just because one post was about a 15 year old taking drugs, doesn't mean that's what all younger posters are about.

Perhaps, actually have a look around and get to know people before dismissing those who are younger.

its funny, cause I went out of my way to say hello to the OP in the chatroom, but I guess I didnt do enough to welcome them since they ran right off and posted a thread about how nasty it was in there!


As for how "grim" it is, I have been a chatmod for about three years and when i started nobody was willing to moderate the chat, much less be there enough to make a difference. Chat moderators then didnt want to put up the effort. I volunteered and it took alot of work to convince the troublemakers to be nice long enough for others to hold a convo. Im not sorry its gotten to the point where there are too many young people using it now

If it were that bad, nobody would come to chat, and if they did they wouldnt stay, which is how it was when i got the chatmod gig so if I sound unapologetic its because im pretty happy that now the complaint is that there are too many people having conversations in the chat room. If you dont like it, thats fine, dont come - there are plenty of us who like it as it is (but we dont post about how glad we are that you didnt come back lol)


As for the old crowd that used to be there, that was like five years ago or more. There are always new people coming to the site, and to the chat. Every year we have new chatters, some stay some dont but I can point out all the chat regs and there are at least a couple for pretty much every year there has been a hipchat! Even we were noobs at one point, long long ago. I love seeing the old crewe when they come thru, but I enjoy meeing the new people just as much!


On the age limit, I have gotten conflicting information on that and as such have stopped banning for just being underage. Its that simple

 

i've seen these kinds of formulaic threads on the same subject matter enough that it makes me want to gag every time i see them. if it really is as much an issue as it seems, why not make a chat section for it (old hippies)? if there are already too many rooms, i'm sure one could be axed with little enough complaint that it would be well worth it. even though i wouldn't call myself old (i'm only 20) or a hippie, i think this sounds like a great idea. i'd hate to see any good folks feel out of place here to the point of disregarding either the chatrooms, the forums, or the younger forumers. furthermore, if you can stomach it (and i know how tasteless, insensitive, ignorant, etc persons of different generations and upbringings can seem to each other), i'd encourage you to come back more often and try to get a really solid sense of the chat atmosphere with or without a variety of users...there are always going to be users that "click" or clash more than others.

 

There are some bad apples in the chat but realistically only one, maybe 2 mods are there to clean them up. i see mods in this very thread that are complaining about it but dont do crap. Only one does and that is samson.

Only in a dream world will everyone get along and not act like drama queens in a silly Chat but mods can prevent that and its pretty hard to When one is doing all the dirty work while the others just bitch.

Im hardly in here because really all they talk about is drugs. or some politics, or people just bashing people for no reason/ judging them. Its not healthy and IMO we need more mods ACTUALLY WILLING to take the time and chat in the room.

Im ashamed at this and I give mad props to sam and just frowns on others who gave up. THEY should get the privilege of being a mod taken away because they are clearly doing a shitty job, if not, doing their job at all.
