Get a deep bucket, like those deep white commercial ones that are made of quite thick plastic and cut the bottom out of it. Or alternately get some one to do it for you. Bury the bucket 20 centimetres deep (or so that it stays in place firmly depending on bucket size) in the middle of the garden or vegie patch with the cut side facing up, and there you have it! A cheap and simple compost bin! Add fallen leaves, lawn clippings, vegie scraps in layers and keep adding to it like this until the bin is full. Then, you just lift up the bin and spread the decomposing organic matter directly into your garden around the plants! As it is only a small composting bin you’d be doing this every 3 months or so, maybe sooner if the temperature was warm. Keep the cut off piece as a lid or cover the organic material with newspaper to keep it dark inside and this will encourage the much needed worms into your garden! Give it a spray of water now and then to keep it moist or a bit more often it is really hot. Once its up and running you can lift it, empty it, and then bury it in the same spot again or move it to somewhere else that needs nourishment and start again. If you have a larger space try having a few of them. They are cheap, easy, and once your plants flourish they will conceal the bin altogether! If you find it hard to come across things to fill the bin regularly, ask your neighbours or family to keep their vegie peels or go and rake someone’s garden for fallen leaves! I’m sure they won’t mind! Happy Gardening! August xxx
That's a great idea! My dad usually does a garden, and he used to have a compost pile, but he used chicken wire to encase his pile. I tried to get him to do another one, but he said that he didn't have anymore chicken wire. This is simple and cheap that I could do it!
