Okay, I read that story over and over and couldn't find ANYWHERE how this chimp came into contact with the victim in the first place. It wasn't his owner that was attacked, right? So are his owners going to be in any trouble? A woman is now permanently FUCKED UP because they were too stupid to let professionals take over the care of Travis when he got too big for them to handle. It says he previously escaped and had to be chased all around town, why didn't they realize then that they were no longer capable of handling him on their own???? Those people should be jailed for pure and total stupidity. When a pet easily weighs the same or more as you and leads the police on a chase, it's time to let someone who can handle him take over.

 

I avidly disagree with keeping such an animal contained in such a shitty environment. Things were BOUND to go wrong. Like Kinky said, there were BIG signs beforehand that this was a stupid idea.

all my lame sexist joking aside, i agree. i think it's fundamentally fucked up to keep apes (or even most primates) in a zoo with "realistic" environments, let alone in worse conditions still

its sad to go to the zoo back home and see the gorillas. they have some space to wander around a bit, but not the hundreds of square miles they deserve, and with little to occupy them since they do not need to find food for themselves. they remind me a lot of humans - the grownups seem depressed or otherwise fucked up, but the little kids are so happy and playful - full of awe and joy, in their innocence.

last time i went to the zoo i saw a baby gorilla on one side of the glass and a baby human on the other side, and despite the glass they were playing with each other like any two kids would. making faces at each other and being happy and such. the baby was laughing, and the gorilla was clearly amused as well. but in the corner of that part of their area the adult gorilla was sitting still, facing a corner so he didn't have to look at all the people staring at them. after a while of this he started freaking out and throwing his dish around and pounding his fists on shit.

FTW, I'd have a chimp for a pet, but I'd have a huge area for him, and reinforced caging. But my chimp would be so happy he wouldn't wanna leave cause I'd get him a girl chimp and he'd get his fuck on.

I just watched a news report on this same story and the reporter said the chimp's owner said the attack may have been caused when Travis wanted to go for a car ride, but she gave him tea and a XANAX instead! Yeah...someone really REALLY needs to smack these morons on the head with an iron skillet.
