Did China test a new feature in it's ongoing attempts to control the Internet in that country? Questions are many, answers are few over the alleged shutdown of many Internet resources all at once. Web surfers in China and elsewhere were unable to access many Chinese websites including VPNs (private networks) that allow people to browse the web without revealing their IP#s and locations. Many foreign websites, never blocked before were inaccessible. Even people in Hong Kong and Japan were having difficulty accessing Chinese websites.

The two major Chinese Internet services denied there was any problem on their end and the International cables were not damaged in the recent Indonesian earthquake.

So many are looking to the Chinese government to explain the mysterious blackout. Anonymous had threatened to take down China's Great Firewall, but they don't claim they even tried.

Could it be the International Cyberwar among the US, China, Russia, Iran and Israel heating up?

And Russia too is clamping down on the Internet fearing too much freedom is going to cause people to rise up or some such bs.

Of course one of the reasons why the Russians haven't really gone after the Internet is because the Russian mafia & hackers are making too much money from it.

And as we know Putin exists only to benefit himself and the mafia. Putin doesn't even use a computer! Maybe cause he knows it ain't safe with Russian hackers all around.

i remember when they tested this a few months ago.... those damn smart chinese had already found a way around it. rerouting ips or what have you. theres always a way, always a loophole. they will never kill the internet, they would destroy themselves before that happened. arent geeks that have worked on linux OSs working on their own type of internet as well? from space? hmmm im not worried about any of it, where theres a will theres a way. do we have stronger will then the evils? idk greed is pretty damn powerful.

Despite the way its presented sometimes in the movies.Theres no way any government totally ycan keep up with private enterprise.

And with the internet, not even possible. Its only the way it is in China becuase everyone goes through state run ISPs blocking a site totally different from peeking into what data is sent with encryption. i.e the actaul important anti terrorism stuff. Dependant on breaking whatever level of encryption exists at the time.

And if they could do that, they,d be able to break into all our bank accounts. Stop P2P and wikileaks.

In the end with China, I think its going to come down, as it always does, to the almighty dollar, and especially their manufacturing sector. Because of all the growth in the last 20 years, they now have a massive middle class, go backwards with that, its all going to turn to shit and everyones going to blame the commies

China's growth rate is unsustainable. They will soon experience what has happened in the US with the middle class getting squeezed. They're in the middle of a huge property bubble that has made ppl feel like they have more money than they really do. And we all know how well that worked out in the USA.

Chinese government's have been cracking down and arresting bloggers. The same thing is happening around the world, seems like the control (more likely surveillance) of the internet is inevitable. Nations like the UK and U.S have been selling cyber-surveillance devices to aid dictators like Gaddafi. Companies like BlueCoat, and programs like EAGLE sell surveillance as forms to prevent terrorism, but just like in Libya it was used to control rather than to prevent. Maybe in the future, with the internet heavily patrolled we'll be connecting to the internet through satellite phones in order to bypass all security measures.

Here's another excellent position statement by Tim Berners-Lee, one of the creators of the WWW...

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/apr/17/tim-berners-lee-monitoring-internet

This is exactly how I feel about recent developments regarding government and corporate intrusion into private lives. Open systems, freedom of choice are essential to the further development of the Internet. Trust in its ability to guarantee privacy is essential for it to thrive.

Solar prominence. Solar Flares. Electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Gremlins. Photoshop® Lens-Flare.

Of course China has a kill switch for the Internet. Why wouldn't they? Or Russia? Or the United States?

Your only hope is that they forgot to program it for Mac servers and Mac PCs. We'll be non-targets and doing fine. LOL

Anyhow, it's a good preview of what a real electromagnetic pulse (EMP) would be like when one really does come along.

    Photoshop® Lens-Flare.

There is a boat know as the Chinese Junk. Isn't that ironic that they are shipping us the same quality crap: Chinese Junk. Stuff that falls apart, Dollar Stores & KMart & Sporting Goods places are loaded with it. The American CEO's are all rich bastards who could care less. Have you ever looked at the rubber that falls out of a ruptured tie-down bungie chord? I've had those things fall apart in the matter of a week. And those smelled freaking toxic, God knows what kind of solvent they used to dissolve those recycled rubber tires or whatever... People don't even want to know. Staples is substituting their terrific Avery Office Supplies for generic sub-standard junk. You can hardly even see through the 'clear' plastic. And you get short-sheeted where stuff of the stated dimension barely fits inside. I think they are doing it to our clothes, too. So you just think you've gained weight when you now require two-sizes bigger. Duh?! The less material they use, the more they keep, make, resell. So they've levered themselves into this huge manufacturing giant by making & selling junk. Doesn't anybody sense the downfall of Western Civilization here? Cheaper quality materials. Do we really want to help these oppressive dictators run the World & shut down the Internet?

Once, while tutoring an ex-g'friend's teenage daughter on global economics & I happened to mention the country of China, to which she evidently took offense (since she was marginally Japanese...?) —She retorted, "You don't have to be a racist!" She thought that was cool & was evidently saving it for just the right moment. Well, I found that slyly amusing, since I was merely mentioning it as a country, demographic, an economic force, an international boundary & I wasn't being condescending about it in the least or calling them a bunch of Chinks ;0

However, here, under the guise & anonymity of a screen persona, I do feel free to speak openly, since I am not living in Beijing where the secret police will promptly bust my door down a la 1984.

I think when people speak politically of 'C_ _ _ A' they are referring to an oppressive government that is no longer called, 'Red China' but acts pretty much the same as always: suppressing freedom of speech. We generally side with its peoples' desire for freedom against the wishes of their Big Brother as much as we hope they sympathize in our plight with our own Uncle Sam. I believe I speak for most when I affirm we are not down on Orientals nor, Heaven forbid' —being even a twinge anti-Semitic...or even mentioning the Name of G_D...

"Oh what a tangled web we weaves,
When we be I/O Personalities!" —Me

Pardon me if I speak bluntly: The day Hipforums decides to turn politically polite, I will rejoin FarceBook & become a pretentious, lying, hypocrite & never state my true feelings (which all humans possess but rarely confess because they can trace my IP Address) & I will LIKE the Hell out of EVERYTHING both GOOD & EVIL just to, well...feel 'LIKED'...by 'FRIENDS' ...well?! LIKE ME, QUICK!!! —HELP —I need to feel VALIDATED!!! :mickey:

I just thought of an 'Appropriate' Song:

"In My Secret Life" - Leonard Cohen

    I saw you this morning.
    You were moving so fast.
Can’t seem to loosen my grip
    On the past.
And I miss you so much.
    There’s no one in sight.
    And we’re still making love
    In My Secret Life.

    I smile when I’m angry.

    I cheat and I lie.
I do what I have to do
    To get by.
But I know what is wrong,
And I know what is right.
And I’d die for the truth
    In My Secret Life.

Hold on, hold on, my brother.

    My sister, hold on tight.
    I finally got my orders.
I’ll be marching through the morning,
    Marching through the night,
    Moving cross the borders
    Of My Secret Life.

    Looked through the paper.

    Makes you want to cry.
    Nobody cares if the people
    Live or die.
And the dealer wants you thinking
That it’s either black or white.
Thank God it’s not that simple
    In My Secret Life.

    I bite my lip.

    I buy what I’m told:
    From the latest hit,
    To the wisdom of old.
    But I’m always alone.
And my heart is like ice.
    And it’s crowded and cold
    In My Secret Life.
