    Following a riot by environmental activists in China, a waste water pipeline project from a Japanese owned paper plant was cancelled. Over 1,000 protesters in the city of Qidong on the China coast took over a government office, overturned cars, destroyed computers and beat police officers bloody.

    The pipeline would've dumped the sewage off the coast of Qidong. It seems the Chinese are finally saying they've had enough pollution of their air, land and water! Now if only Americans would do the same...

    Think of the risks these environmentalists are taking, openly defying their government who until recently refused to even acknowledge the health effects of industrial pollution in China.

    Wow! That's quite successful. That was an immensely stupid project, I'm glad they derailed it.

    So by shutting down the pipeline they effectively stop the paper-mill from operating? not clear in the article...I'm all for it BTW,

    I live near a recently defunkt pulp mill and lemmy tell ya the air and waters never been cleaner...
    Well, that is if you don't count the toxic metals that were released into the river a couple of years ago when they removed a diversion dam downstream of the largest superfund toxic clean-up site in America to facilitate the relocation of decades of heavy metal sediment generated by the anaconda copper company.

    Ok playing devils (republicans) advocate here;

    Those bleeding-heart liberal panty-waists are killing jobs!:p

    I lived in Oregon back in late 70s when the mills were going full steam and the pollution was hard to escape. Went back a few years ago and was amazed to see the difference! Of course lots of mill towns seemed deserted anymore, but the water was clear as was the air! Plus far fewer logging trucks hogging the highways.

    As far as the plant in China goes, you have to wonder where all that waste is piling up now...

    Also I love the way Japan is so eager to build paper mills in OTHER countries, and strip those countries of their forests, but no way they'll log their own forests... What does that tell ya? There should be a term for that when you're willing to exploit other countries resources to save having to use your own or pollute other countries so you don't have to do it to yours. Oh, yeah, I remember now, ECONOMIC IMPERIALISM...

    Frustrating is a lot of locals in this part of the country don't understand.
    They are in denial because they have been dependant on the timber industry for so many generations they think it's some birth-right to make a living from forest, and they are all convinced its the "environmentalists" stopping them, not market forces.

    No, reread that. See how it says "Japan". it is more because they just hate the Japanese. Sad but true. In my two years there, basically nothing motivated the Chinese as much as hating the Japanese, even if it seems like ancient history to many around the world, it sure is not; even to the college students I taught for two years, in regards to Japans atrocities during WW2. Sorry to say it, but getting Japan out of China, culturally, business wise, etc. was the biggest motivating factor more than anything, I am sure, especially when we are talking about Chinese people outside of Beijing and Shanghai (people in these two cities are generally far more open minded towards the Japan). At the very least, the fact that Japan is a player in this story had SOMETHING to do with the severity of these protests, if not the protests as a whole, which would not be a first by a long shot.

    People should perhaps be aware Japan has never made an apology to China or Korea for the atrocities committed during the war. Having visited one of the Japanese concentration camps in China, I have a little more understanding than most as to exactly why the Chinese hate the Japanese so much.

    And the Japanese are far from innocent too - have heard them say terrible things about the Chinese.

    The most polluted country on earth is finally taking action?? Wow good for them. It's surprising they care considering how common it is to treat hiking trails like refuse bins in China.

    Very good point, Carlfloydfan, and helps to explain why a government notorious for the Tiananmen Square incident would let this type of protest happen without bringing out the tanks...
