Check out this Chinese melon art site: http://www.americade.info/melons1.htm Magnificent artwork, but kind of like sand or ice sculpture - seems a shame to spend so much time and talent on something so impermanent. I'd get pretty pi$$ed when the melons went bad.

wasn't there a lady in a movie who carved things out of potatoes? pretty cool photos there bedlam, and i would think that somehow they could preserve them... though i'm not sure at all
