it can harm the brain when performed on infants without painkillers (as is often the case) because of the extreme pain. how would you like it? it can cause them to pull away some and it has a terrible effect on breastfeeding, as the babies can be in shock for a fair amount of time afterwards. it can also affect the mother because the trust bond is broken, as the mother's main job is to PROTECT the child; and in allowing it to be tortured, she certainly isn't doing a good job. the baby loses some of it's natural trust in the mother, something which may subconsciously never go away... but let's not get talking about early trauma now...
