I will have the whole day to fill waiting for my friend to arrive on 12/14. It's my first visit to Amsterdam and I don't want to stray too far from the Hilton that first day on my own. I looked at Nemisis' map and it doesn't radiate out as far as the area I'll be in, but I'm a smoker and really want to visit a coffeeshop. Nemisis, I hope you or any other people familiar with the area can suggest something for me :)

    Thanks

Not overly familiar with this area to be honest.
I can only suggest using the tram, etc.
The only coffeeshops I know of heading out in that
direction would be Katsu, Tweedy, Club Media and
it appears even those entail a bit of a walk.
I'm sure there could be others, hopefully somebody
else more familiar with this part of the city can help.
Why not score first in the centre to take with you.?

There does seem to be the odd one or two coffeeshops in the Hilton
area by the looks of it, but not sure if they are still open or trading
under a different name, etc. Personally, based on this, I would ask
the hotel reception or doorman for the nearest coffeeshop.
    Have a good one.:)

    Zieseniskade 22 The Noon (coffeeshop)

Weteringschans 143 Awareness Winkel (smart shop)

but if your going to this area you may as well consider the following:

If I was staying there I'd have but 1 gameplan.......take a tram to leidseplein. it is a main square with restaurants bars coffeeshops shopping etc. it is about 5 minutes by tram from where you are and a simple route at that. As for the tram, go to a souvenier store, supermarket, or cigarette / magazine store and buy a strippenkart. This is a tram ticket with multiple credits on it. It will cost you 2 credits to take the tram to the leidseplein. Present your ticket to the attendant at the REAR of the tram to stamp. If there is no attendant on board, locate a yellow metal ticket box. Fold your strippenkart so that you stick credit #2 into the yellow metal ticket box. The box will stamp the time you paid onto credit #2. You have now paid to ride any tram / bus for 90 minutes (or 60 I'm stoned :)

the best travel option is going to the VVV tourist office at the central station stationsplein (as you walk out of central station it is in front of you about 200 feet in the central station outside area) here you can be a 1 day or multiple day strippenkart. its ridiculously cheap and provides unrestricted use of trams, buses, and metro's (subways).

I stayed in your area on my first trip and if there are coffeeshops, they are small / indescriptive and places mainly full of "locals". I really didn't enjoy being in that area. It is quite far from the action so you will definately need to use public transportation. You will be happy that you did too....trust me. The public transportation in XXX rocks!!! This part of town is the upscale end of town with very expensive restaurants and lots of businesses selling upscale clothing and business professional attire. I prefer the slums of the RLD but the Hilton will be very nice too so enjoy :)

If you walk East on Apollolaan in about 3 blocks you'll come to Beethovenstraat where you can catch a #5 Centraal Station tram(to the left from Apollolaan) that will take you to Museumplein, Leidseplein, and Dam Square (the stop is behind The Royal Palace).
