I'm thinking a lot lately because my major is Liberal Arts... which is pretty broad, but I'm not entirely sure what I want to do (career wise) when I'm out of college. What is your major? I should probably figure out 'what I want to do' relatively soon.. but I'm pretty ambivalent..
English is my major. I will probably teach internationally for a year or two and then do something that's completely unrelated to my major. All in all, it doesn't REALLY matter what you major in. The piece of paper is nice to have as it makes you much more qualified for jobs that simply require a college degree, even though they have nothing to do with your field of study. ...or you could always go to grad school.... but that doesn't sound like the thing for me.
Cool. I always wanted to be a lawyer, until I worked in a law firm for a year and decided it's sort of the last field I want to work in. When did you decide law was for you? How many years do you have left of school?
I've switched majors 3 times since I've been in college, and I'm only on my second semester! But, it didn't affect me because I was already going for an AA, which covered all of the switches I made. I was wanting my liberal arts degree with an emphasis in visual arts. But, just because I love doing something, doesn't mean I want it to be my career, so I switched. I was then wanting to persue something in writing/english. But, the most I'll be able to do around here with that is teach, and if I'm going to go to school 4 years, it better at least get me a salary that isn't considered borderline poverty. I'm now going for Social Work/Services/Counseling for children. I'm passionate about it, and around here, it's a highly available field.
Agronomy (Crop Sciences). Ultimately I want to open a medicinal marijuana facility in California. Or at least work at one.
3-5 yrs depending. I don't want to be a lawyer, but I would love to work at a Canadian embassy in the US.
That is sort of what I figure. If I'm educated, competent and can get through an interview impressing someone, I highly doubt 'my major' is going to hold me back from getting a job. I'm thinking something like communications or.... something equally as broad.
I majored in Computer Science and Software Development when I was going... I wanted to go to law school for a while, but I'm not motivated enough to be in school that long... Obvious, right? Considering I didn't even complete a 4 year degree...
Communications sounds pretty ghey. If you really want to take an easy way out, do something like psychology (dunno if you can do that in a BA though, but maybe)... It should be easy enough and it WILL land you jobs in lots of places (as an assistant, receptionist, etc)... but they will be real jobs and not shit $10 per hour jobs. (Sociology and anthropology could also work)
That's actually pretty cool. Not the medical marijuana part, but it's not every day you meet someone interested in agronomy! Good luck Cate. And ChaosFactor.... I took AP Computer Science in 11th grade. So... not my cup of tea. :cheers2:
No to all three of those. Especially not sociology or psychology, but anthropology though. My sisters major was Global Studies or something and she landed a pretty sweet job.
im a psych major and sociology minor. i have to go to grad school to do anything really interesting or make good money . im going into clinical psych. i want to go into trauma at first, dabble in mental illness...definitely work with people with personality disorders, work in a prison/jail for a little bit (i know a woman who runs amazing programs with inmates), and eventually end up in marriage and family therapy when im old and gray
Well, I really don't know what your interests are, but those three are pretty fucking easy and do land a job in the Liberal Arts sector at least. I dunno what else there is... Philosophy is complete and utter useless bullshit... then you got stuff like politics and international studies which is also a lot of bullshit but might land you a job as an intern at some shit place... I dunno.
Environmental Science is something I can switch to as a Liberal Arts major. I am leaning towards that kind of. I agree with philosophy being bullshit.. and I think psychology is just, pretty boring. Plus everyone and their mother has a degree in psychology around here.
I love it... I still do a bit of work just for fun, but for what the education was costing me for a job market that was moving overseas, I was done... And don't take psych as BSR suggested... Girls in psych are NUTS.... Half of 'em are in there to better understand their daddy issues. For real, I've never met a stable girl with a heavy interest in psych and I've dated a couple... :cheers2:
Yeah, psy will be boring. Environmental Science can be some pretty dense stuff though... depending on the school ofcourse... I dunno how you can do a BA in that though.
lol I've taken a good amount of psychology classes... and have read a lot into the subject. I think I turned 18 and just lost interest in it though. Neurology is pretty awesome, but psychology is pretty gay.
