    everyone seems to be searching for a commune searching searching.

    I have been looking for land to buy. here in canada there is a huge whack of land waiting to be purchase at very very low prices. If everyone who was looking for a commune was to get say 400-700$ we could all put our money together and buy a few hundred acres of land! we wouldn't be kicked off the land because we own it, and we wouldn't have to pay taxes because we'd have no income!

    plus it is canada! I have no problem with people escapeing the states and hidding out, and i certainly have no problem with pot/shrooms!

    But keep in mind I am not looking for "share holders" I am looking for people who are sick of all the shit that goes on in everyday life! the cell phones, SUVs, and all the other shit that annoys everyone...

    I dunno what else to say....get all your asses to canada! I promise you won't starve to death!

    www.mls.ca it's got alot of property not the cheapest. I talked to a land surveying company and they told me how to buy empty land owned by the government.

    it's a very overly complicated process...you have to find the land you want, and then get it surveyed, then they check the price....I have been looking around the timmins area. I have found alot of properties that have had 150-200 acres for between 7500-12500. I Figure that is enough for a small commune.

    You really have to watch and be patient, the good properties come up all the time.

    the only thing that cheep in mb is swamp. which no matter the size is not good for a commune. good luck starting your own though. should not take long to buy the land at prices like that. what about the gov land though, I don't mind complicated. Our plans are to buy land in octobre when prices drop right before winter, here anyways. if we can get more, or better land you would deffinately be helping us out tremendously.

    but wouldnt it be under the canadian laws? so couldnt some cops come bust everyone for shrooms? i think u should just buy that land and make it its own country. and change it to a place a bit warmer.

    Well, Mr. Morrison, I would assume that the idea is to dump the outside world entirely,~ MicroNations tend to be intent on drawing attention to themselves, and for the most part are pretty silleh things.
    No offense,~ I happen to find them a lot of fun and valuable for planning self-sufficiency and sustainability on a scale applicable to one's own situation.

    Food is generally grown, and (minimally) bought from a store...
    or a faerie brings it, but that is a different kind of meal entirely
    <^_^<) <(^_^)> (>^_^)>

    Makihiko, I'm with you.
    Count meh in,~
    it'd be a lot easier than doing it myself,
    and a hell of a lot more fun and enlightening on the whole, anyway.

    Is it a little early to be talking about any kind of time frame?

    oh no time frame is whenever we can buy the land...lol

    food would oviously come from the ground...where it usually comes from...

    and as for cops..it's northern ontario...if there are any cops...they are busting people for hunting in the wrong season...and if they do find us...i'm pretty sure it won't matter, we can just kill them and eat them, lol

    hmmm...swamp eh....not good at all...quebec and northern BC have some pretty cheap land aswell. but it seems the places with the cheapest land have the harshest winters...it's a trade off. but as long as you don't loaf around in the summer it should all work out!

    uhm...i'll PM you if I see any nice land

    Yeah, I did think that was kinda funny, but some people don't know. my biggest fear is we will have food grown for the winter but, then what about seeds? I know they come from the plants, but how do i get them out?

    righto, I have been going over the costs, and I should need around 500 per person. I figure, thats not too bad...the land will be the easy thing, the hard part will be finding the animals, getting them there, getting something too cook on, and getting houseing...the money will prolly be the easiest part. and if we don't have it done have it don't by the time it gets cold...we'll be screwed....

    I figure we should all try to find people! and hopefully by the begining of next spring (sping 2007)we should be able to get the money, the resources, and all the people ready to move in, If we can get the money before the end of summer we can buy the property during the price "slump" of october, and we will be able to prepare for the next winter, be completely ready, or if some brave sould wanted to live in the winter eating canned food and potatoes...all the power too them, lol. I am so excited!

    seeds are easy to get from almost all plants. some plants like carrots need to mature two years before giving seeds. this is where you need to do your research. also animals are apparently cheap. chicks and ducklings 10$ rabbits 10-15$ goats and sheep starting at 50$. the thing you need to do is have a big garden and either can, freeze, dry or preserve the food somehow to last. carrots and patatoes last without much. there is also game to hunt and natural plants that provide food also in spring, summer and autumn so you don't need to be eating out of your garden all the time, let nature provide.

    I was hopeing to have enough property to use about 2-5 acres for agriculture(maybe more). I don'tthink I could ever eat a rabbit, I have a pet rabbit, I think I'd cry, I don't think I could eat any of the animals I lived with, but I could eat their products (eggs, milk)..I dunno, I would prolly get too attached to the animals.

    I would want sheep,and chickens for sure, but I don't know if I would want a cow...It may be too much to handle..that would have to be later on.

    I had an idea today! we could make things like salsa and jam, and bike into the closest town and sell them to buy things like chickens. People always tell me that you can't live in a commune because...well of many reasons. But I think people think it's weird because thats what they've been told.

    oh right...and two years?...two weeks? or two tyears...carrots can live through the winter?...I'll be happy as long as I have beans and cucumbers and LOTS of tomatoes!another thing I was thinking....I was reading your site (selfsustaining society)...how exactly would we make candles...????

    I agree with everything you said, man.
    Right down to the 5 acres and small animals.
    Goats and chickens are probably the core,~
    plenty of grazing land should be set aside.

    The thing I'm thinking mostly about is what we'd need.
    ~So far, for cheap shelter (before any permanent building goes on)
    I'm thinking of bringing up a 20-or 40' insulated shipping container {$2000}
    and loading it with one of those nice, efficient wood stoves from fourdog {$500}
    and a composting toilet {$1350}

    The basic plan is to build a solar pit greenhouse against the south side of the thing.

    Does anybody think it'd do any good to have a solar oven as a hot-water source in the summer? I mean, the wood stove is there in winter anyway, but I'd like to avoid using it all year long excessively...

    from what I know carrots can last the winter in the fridge, I don't know about our ground. but I do know that they seed after 2 years.

    candles are made from fat. more rescently from waxes, and chemicals(for those nice colors and scents).

    and if you already have a few chickens i suggest getting an incubator for eggs instead of buying new ones all the time.

    a composting toilet is a great Idea. and pls post a link for the fourdog wood stoves. thanks.

    yikes!!!

    thats alot of money for a cheap shelter!

    you have to consider all the costs..the cost of shipping your "cheap" house...

    it wuld be more efficent and cost effective to make the houses out of wood, as for temporary shelter...tents..cost about 40-100$ and our homes will cost between 400-700$, the would make a deccent size home....it won't be pretty but it will work untill winter when it will need to be insulated, i would like to use natural insulation.

    as for wood stoves i'm gonna say PAH! i'm intent on useing a chimeny. I have several thousand bricks at my house...all I need is a pick up truck.
