concentrating THC levels in plants

I was just studying up on my ecology exam, talking about herbivory and how plants have evolved chemical defenses against herbivores..

so for example, thc in weed was a chemical defense against herbivores. is that how it evolved?

Providing the levels of thc vary from plant to plant. Do you think it would be possible to test the thc levels in specific plants, and actively select the plants with higher levels to reproduce, and continue doing over generations of plants to create more potent weed?

Or do people already do this? lol.
