that's what I'm thinking. Also, is this a social sciences course, anthro, psych, pop culture? You'd get better answers if we knew what field you were speaking to. dm who actually knows people who majored in American pop culture
Careful, i tried that back in my college days(the few of them). i decided to do an English paper on hippies and got so into reading about hippies i never did get the paper done. 1st English course i ever did bad in.
Hippies enjoy the freedom of non-conformity or self-expression. Bohemians, Beatniks and Hippies are people who seek out their own course through the world and literally experiment with all that it has to offer. Their rejection of mental and physical limitations allow them to really get outside the box of conventional practices which in many people has unleashed whole new progressive genres of art, music, poetry, food, travel, philosophy, politics, conservation...well, you get the picture. One of the key (and fun) traits of proponents of such a lifestyle is being able to unabashedly seek what use to be labled as ''Doing Your Thing". You may have to go through a lot of ''things'', but what you end up with is usually a wonderful journey of self discovery and in the end a better love and understanding of you. Hippies pursue their self discoveries around their neighborhoods and around the world. Sometimes other cultures and other lands provide the ultimate environment for their fulfillment. I''ve met many people on the world''s roads who were in love with the simple concept of enjoying the essence of just being, no matter where it was. The beauty of the Hippie experience is it allows for discovering and enjoying all avenues of self, and by doing so, help develope the best in others.
I like that. Is it your own? Is it ok if I use it somewhere on my web site, so long as I give you the credit for it? And, ps, I agree with you all here. We march to the beat of our own drummer and trust me, we go wherever our heart leads us!
I believe there is a wide variety of hippies. Just as there is a broad spectrum of the polar opposite: republicans. I don't listen to any music. I keep a fairly clean home without obsession. I take no drugs and don't drink. I practice safer sex. I raise chickens for eggs and fertilizer. I compost. I grow veggies above ground in pots. I share my living space with two others at below-market cost. I bake bread and I pay people to sew for me. I support efforts to recycle anything and everything. I donate blood every three months. I'm not without some prejudices. I make no apologies for who I am. I'm happy most of the time. I work at reducing stress in my life. Sometimes that comes with a price... the price is usually less cash on hand. I get by
Ahhh! I love these threads. Me thinks me'll keep subscript to it. Hey Duncan, is the words aside that beautiful peacock Hebrew? Aramaic? What does it mean? I study some Hebrew but not writing, just the language. Also, please don't take it as a knock, but, wondering why no music? peace, Sherry
I know I am a hippie, and anyone could probably recognize the fact instantly. My lifestyle reflects an unconventional approach in almost all aspects. I am 54 years of age and live on a converted school bus. Low cost, alternative housing reflects thinking out of the box. I would expect cleanliness from a real hippie, an alternative that is an example of an intelligent individual who is resourcefull and imaginative. A hippie would want leisure time and contemplative time, and playtime, and would not be inclined to obtain a full time job doing something they didn't like.. He or she would not be lazy, but someone who enjoyed a balanced life with work and play in equal measures. I guess hippies dress differently than ordinary mainstream people of their culture. They like loose, comfortable cotton or natural fiber clothing, often let head hair and face hair do their own thing, feeling like there is no need to interfere with nature and natural bodily functions. Hippies like organic food. Well, this broad generality comes from the probable fact that people of this particular mindset also are health conscious, often shopping at cooperative food stores, and being vegeterians too. Many hippies don't get married in a conventional manner. They don't see the need for a piece of paper stating they are a team, and probably wouldn't want to go through the legal processes necessary, or the social rituals. Hippies want world peace, and they love flowers. Most people love flowers, but do they wear them in their hair, or give them to others at street corners. Hippies want LOVE, love-ins, love- outs, love...love...love !!!!!! I think hippies are alternative folks who step out of the mainstream and live life as they want, not as the culture around them dictates. It is not always easy taking this road less traveled. Is there really any other path worth taking. I don't think so !!!!
