Talk of moon cups in the placenta (lol) thread got me wondering about the contraceptive choices amongst all you hippyish lot... Specifically the pill and other chemical-based rather than physical forms of contraception...

Right now,I chart my cycle and try to avoid intercourse when I am ovulating, or use condoms then.
Very natural, and hippiesh but not as reliable as I would prefer but it has worked for us for years now ..
    condoms suck.

I am trying to coax hubby into a vasectomy.
He wants one- he is scared of the surgery. Soon though , I have all the paperwork mwhahaha

Wow i really did not think people still did that, its a horrible idea your gambling with something way to big in my opinion, im a relationship kinda guy so the women im with i will ask to go on the pill as well as me using condoms. Im 21 years of age and have a plan for my future, i dont want kids or anything else

    You'd be surprised.
It is actually pretty reliable IF you do it right, and have a regular cycle. The hard part is in actually doing it, charting everything- period start and end date, cervical changes(which i do keep track of, TMI I know) .. and some even take temps or use ovulation predictors. Both for Trying to conceive , or for trying not to.(that would be pretty pricey for BC tho) . And being really diligent about using protection IOW condoms the entire length of ovulation
BUT yes. I wouldn't rely on THAT alone if it was completely detrimental that we not get pregnant.
It's sort of a good idea as a woman to keep track of all that anyway.Menstrual irregularities can be signs of other problems.

TBperfectlyH , though I am not entirely sure we are all that fertile considering 10 yrs together with minimal BC has only resulted in a miscarriage and the one child we TRIED for.

i agree with you that a woman should keep track of those things in general and as a man i try to keep a good idea of where the woman i am with is in her cycle although i am currently single. anyway with the pill being as safe as it is i think all women should be on it, if anything just to keep you better regulated, it takes a big weight off your mind, and i assure you as soon as the man pill comes out i will be on it, although i will continue to use condoms

    Ah,well.
I don't agree with the pill being safe in the slightest. Hormones are scary things to play with and the list of side effect and possible complications from the pill "for the average women" alone is lengthy. It isn't exactly fool proof either.

I do like the IUD and almost got one(there is actually a wait for them here, and it is a total pain ,many hoops to jump through to get one here for some odd reason)
.. but now hubby is planning the vas , so yay.

vasectamys are a good idea, im considering it myself, and if there was that many bad side effects from the pill it would not be on the market

there is no secrets about the bad effects of cigarettes and people always knew about it, or at least had good suspicions, it would not be the same if it were leaving women infertile or causing that much damage, they would know

Packs of the pill do, like most medication, come with a long long list of the risks. It's not like the info isn't there or is some big secret. (By the way, I do take the pill)

^ Oi... Charting your cycle is one of the reliable ways to NOT get pregnant and TOO get pregnant. Temperature changes and cervical fluid can tell you a lot about where you are in your cycle. Your body does not lie.

I do not take the birth control pill... I did when I was younger and I they had a huge effect on my psyche. I went on a different type of bcp and thought I was going insane. I have a reaction to spermicide so that eliminates all off those types. I had an IUD in and had constant yeast infections for six months (Amy asked. lol)

My husband is going for his vasectomy this month. We've been waiting months for this apt.

Been doing this method for nearly three years and have never had an accident. It's been very very reliable. I would use the pill. But I'm useless as taking it everyday.

Was on the minipill which I need to get back on asap.

I don't like the idea of putting that shit into my body but for me it is the easiest and cheapest way to go, I get the pill for free so no need to buy freaking 30 bucks worth of condoms. Plus it helps me with a lot of my PMS and I think from coming off of it I gained weight.

I've been wondering this. I read that there have been multiple studies on pre-ejaculate and how it does not contain any sperm but the reason this method fails is because that man does not pull out quick enough, even though doctors lead you to believe there is sperm in pre-cum. So if you actually have great control over your own penis, I would think this method would be a good one?

How long have you been doing this?

lol....guys giving advice on birth control for women.
BTW, the pill doesn't work for everyone, as I have mentioned before, I got pregnant while I was on the pill (and we used condoms with spermicide) and 2of my sisters got pregnant while on the pill.
Now we just keep track of my cycles and use the old fashioned pull out method.

Here is a great article on birth control and the risks:

"11 Reasons to Avoid the Birth Control PILL

    by Dominique Birth

    1. All oral contraceptives increase synthetic hormones (estrogen and progesterone) in the bloodstream, and thus in all tissues of the body. As the pill is relatively new, there are no studies on the long-term effects this may present.

    2. High estrogen is detrimental to a healthy cycle as it may prevent ovulation. The luteinizing hormone (ovulation-causing) will not trigger if there are inappropriate levels of estrogen, which occurs with use of the contraceptive pill.

    3. Estrogen, in its nature, makes things grow, such as the developing ovum (egg). High levels also promote other growths such as tumors, cysts and cancers. Cases of long-term damage are showing up as a result of extensive use of synthetic hormones.

    4. High progesterone thickens cervical mucus and prevents healthy fertile cervical mucus as well as sexual arousal fluid from being produced, making sex less comfortable and enjoyable.

    5. Synthetic hormones are foreign to our bodies and are thus sent to the liver for detoxification. They are sent back and forth between the liver and the bloodstream for they cannot be processed; the body does not recognize them.

    6. Acne, digestion and adrenal issues, infertility and other physiological concerns are often a result of an over-burdened liver and high levels of hormonal toxins.

    7. Synthetic estrogen decreases the levels of the neuro-transmitter serotonin, which can lead to mood swings, apathy, low libido, low self-esteem and depression.

    8. Synthetic hormones from the pill are found in human urine and feces and have been causing endocrine disruption (infertility) of the fish in rivers contaminated with human waster. (Right here in Alberta and BC!)

    9. The birth control pill is a male-designed concept that allows women to forget their natural cycles, possibly leading them to explore sexuality with very little conscious thought, thinking that they are “free” of responsibility.

    10. Instead of being “free”, a woman on the pill now depends on and directly supports a pharmaceutical corporation for birth control. She is essentially handing over her sexual health to a group who does not necessarily have her best interests in mind.

    11. Birth control pills will not be accessible forever, or acceptable forever, nor after our unsustainable society goes into decline.

    What will you do then?"
