I did it in Seattle, in Costa Rica (stayed at one CR guy's house with 2 American surfers and ended up traveling with the American guys for weeks) and in Ecuador, and I met some AWESOME people. I'm still in touch with all of them and one of the American guys has come up to visit me several times to hang out or go on camping trips. I can say I was SO happy I did it and would love to do it lots more, because there are some truly amazing folks out there. One of the nice bonuses, aside from saving money on hostels of course!, is that staying with locals offers you a different view of the place you're visiting. You learn things about the culture and if they show you around, find out about all the cool little local hotspots away from the tourists. Couldn't recommend the experience more :)
