Hi everyone. Just wondering, does anyone have any remedies for a cough?
I have been sick since Saturday. and, i have this horrible cough now, like, its not dry, or icky... it's just.. like there. every time i breathe in, i cough. it's sooo bad.
i took cough medicine (nyquil) today, and it helped me during the day. but, i just took it again about an hour ago, and it's not working now. i've also been drinking lots of tea... and staying indoors (since its like 15 degrees outside here)
does any one have any ideas of how to help me supress this, or even better... get rid of this stupid cough?!
    thanks so much!

Well, I hope you don't still have the cough, but something that always works real well for me is a Chinese herbal cough medicine called San She Dan Chuanbei Ye. You can get it in any Chinese grocery store-a package of six vials costs 2 dollars. It has herbal cough med, bronchodilators and expectorants in it and really helps me to breathe and stop coughing. If I have a bad cough, even if the doctor gives me narcotic cough medicine it won't work, but the Chinese stuff does. Hope you feel better.

thanks for reccomending that! there is a chinese grocery store 5 minutes away from me, so that could work out well! i went to the doctors on Monday, and he prescribed a cough syrup, which, did not help. Plus, it was about a week supply, so I just finished it today. I've been off work this past week, because I work with kids, and didnt want them to catch anything (i got it from them, but the kids have been sick all winter, just.. passing around the same thing!). So... tomorrow, I am going back to work, and HOPE i don't get sent home!
But, since the cough medicine didnt work, I'll take a trip to that chinese shop, and see if the have the tea!
    Thanks again!!

Well, it's actually not tea-it's in a package with about six or eight little vials-each vial is one dose. There's a little straw that comes with each vial-you just stick the little straw in the vial and drink it-one vial is one dose, and it doesn't taste bad at all. Good luck!

In some states you CAN get codiene over the counter. You can in IL, but only in private pharmacies (not the chain store crappy ones, like K Mart or Walmart) Best bet is to see a doctor.

A bronchial cough (meaning it orginates in the lungs) is treated quite a bit differently than a "post nasal drip cough." YOU can't tell the difference, really. PND coughs are really much more common, and they will respond to regular sudafed, codeine (not dextromethoraphan, which is in Nyquil, it is basically uselss for coughs) and a drug to loosen the mucous, like Mucinex. You may be able to et all of them OTC, but going to a doctor is better, because in the rare event that it is a bronchial cough,(or even pneumonia) you will need a bronchial dilator (like albuterol) and maybe even an antibitotic) and a good doc will still give you codiene so you can get some sleep at night.

    Good luck.

Not sure if this product is avialiable under the same name in the US, but Benadryl Chesty is generally a good product for your basic chesty cough. It contains 2 active ingrediants a Mucolytic and an Exporeant (that isnt spelt correctly, sorry) which help to losen the phlegm in your chest and then help you to cough it up. It does make you cough more initially, for obvious reason, but it does the trick. :)

Mucinex is about the same. It is now OTC in the USA. Most of the time coughs will run their own time. BUt, in some cases cough can be a symptom of something really serious. I don't want to get into it, because chances are, it is just a post nasal drip cough.

Please see a doctor, or Nurse Practioner.

Thanks so much for your help everyone. :)
I've just been riding it out with lots of tea, and honey. now, after 2 weeks, my cough is finally subsiding, i got the flu! i guess thats what i get for working in a day care. i watch 4-6 kids, and they all got sick one by one over the past 3 weeks.
but, i haven't been so sick like this in.. maybe 4 years... so i guess it's about time. and, at least it's the weekend, so i won't have to miss work again!
