Yea, its a remake of an asian horror movie that was, i HEAR very good, though im not into that whole craze of having nothing happen than flashing something quickly on the screen, i hate cheap scares, i like when a horror movie gives me something shocking that bothers me over a long period of time. Remake any good?
The American version is absolutely terrible, but then again so was the remakes of the ring, the Juon (The grudge) etc. WHY DON'T THEY LEAVE THESE FILMS ALONE?!? For a start, most Japanese horror films focus on the Japanese being extrememly superstitious. Western remakes focus on the gore and the thrill, it just doesn't work in the same way and loses most of the plot. As for the Japanese version, it is fantastic, very creepy.
The remake for Juon was done by the original director, the remake (if you could call it that) of Ringu 2 was done by the original director... The answer to your question is simple, money, and the target audience doesnt want to read subtitles.
They may have been done by the original directors, but the films were also westernised and therefore, made pants. There's always got to be a love story in there, or a coca-cola advert or someone eating Macdonalds etc. As for people who don't read subtitles, they're lazy and don't know what they're missing.
Haven't seen any of the American remakes of the Japanese horrors as i've always assumed (correctly, according to most reviews i have read) that they would be a waste of time. I think that Ringu is one of the best horror films of all time, but i was disappointed with Dark Water. Although the mood was sinister i felt that there wasn't enough plot or set-pieces to maintain my interest, the whole film failed to move me, with the exception of the scene with the little girl hiding under the table from the wet feet, which was great! So, imho, a disappointment.
No shit theyre lazy and dont know what theyre missing, but its those people that are the target audience for modern 'horror'. What does a studio want? MONEY. stop fucking bitching about it, stop paying to see these remakes and bitch about them on fucking message boards. Make your own movie, worked for raimi and jackson.
I didn't like Dark Water either. The preview looked GREAT, but the movie ended up being lousy, like Signs.
i watched the japanese version. absolutely brillant. i was watching with my friend in the cinema, the very front row seats. ahahahhahaha in the middle of the movie, i was turn to my friend, his legs were up on the seat. he was scared of the hand, scared that it will actually grab his leg. man, what a sight.
Yeah the Japanese version is so much scarier. There's stuff that just can't translate into the American remakes, no matter who directs them - all the Japanese cultural subtext about the closeness of spirits and water and the normality of spirit life...the remakes try for the atmosphere but without the background to give i weight they just can't be as scary. Anyone who hasn't seen the Japanese version - go watch! right now! japanese horror is amongst the best in contemporary horror
Jhorror sucks ass. Yes, I said it. And the remake for The Grudge was directed by the original director, same with The Ring 2, too bad those movies blew bigger chunks then the original... Jhorrors obsession with ghosts has gotten annoying, I realize its a huge part of their religion which ofcourse will fill any writers head with thousands of ideas, but stray away from it, its become formulaic. And to say its main focus isn’t on atmosphere (along with: all the Japanese cultural subtext about the closeness of spirits and water and the normality of spirit life) only fills my mind with prejudgemental(but obviously accurate) visions of your false 'avant-garde artistic' personality. Kario, Ringu, Ju-on, all focused on atmosphere, its a trend, create a dark atmosphere, make sure nothing happens for an hour, then randomly flash a creepy image to get the crowd to start paying attention again. I saw no signs of 'Closeness of spirits' or 'normality of spirits' in those movies, all I remember is the spirits were freaking the shit out of the characters and killing them, where’s the fucking normality in that? I know, there is more to Jhorror then those, but what about Takashi? Ok, Audition was good, but the rest of his horror movies were not, at all. No country has the best horror movies (other then Italy in the 70s), its hit or miss there too, and we only hear about the hits...
The little girl was cute, but that was about it. I got bored with it after a while, but still managed to keep it on the whole way through (by being on my computer most of the time and not really paying attention).
