What makes me ask this question is because my dad is thinking of buying my little sister, who is graduating from high school next year, a Ford Mustang for her graduation present. She is begging and begging him for one, and I think a part of the reason why he is is to get her off his back...because she whines sooooooo much when she doesn't get what she wants.

This irritates me for a few reasons:

    1. I never got a high school graduation present, nor a college graduation present from my father.

    2. I work my ass off in the summers helping my dad with his construction business ever since I was 15 years old...my sister has not worked a day in her life and she's 17.

    3. My dad already bought a car for her when she turned 16...I worked in the summers to pay off the car that I bought...and it wasn't even close to being brand new when I got it.

    4. She does nothing to help around the house. I do everyone's laundry, everyone's dishes, I clean the whole house (except for my sister's and my dad's rooms), and I do a lot of the yardwork...

I almost feel I got the shaft. I've worked for everything...which, yes, it has made me a better person, but it would be nice to get a little help every once in awhile...

Maybe I'm just bitter...I don't know...but I feel like the red-headed step-child most of the time. My grandmother GAVE my brother a house and a car...my sister...gets everything and anything she wants and doesn't work for anything...and I get...well...nothing and do everything for myself and everyone else...

So there is my rant...but, did you get a graduation gift from h.s. or college from your parents?

Yes.... but it cost like 200 bucks (not a car)....

And I have always gotten the short end of the stick compared to my brother as well.

I got shafted too, my sister was treated pretty differently in a lot of ways.

But then again I have always been the black sheep, rebel without a cause, etc

Maybe there is some level of resentment bc of your views?

good for you. You and my mom sound a lot similar. she does everything for my grandparents and then gets mad because she is not appreciated. I just wish she would stop. Everyone expects me to continue the trend...and I'm not. I ma getting married and am puttin gmy husband and kids first. I will not feel guilty or let my family intrude upon my life or cause strife in my marraige.

oh and I did get a really nice watch from my mom for my high school graduation present and I got jewlrey from my grandparents. I am an only child though and am the only grand child who lives in the area. When my younger cousin lived here she was the favorite and they always put lots of thought and time into her gifts and simply wrote me a check because 'I am too hard to shop for'...BS I am like the easiest person to shop for ever.

    *shrugs*

Maybe I should have asked for something...

But I didn't really think to...I mean...everything I have, I've worked my ass off for...I didn't really want anything in particular...but my sister...gets...EVERYTHING...and it just feels a little unfair.

Yes, I've definitely been the black sheep and I definitely have different views and have done very strange things (in relation to what "other" kids did/do around here)...but...I've always got good grades (better grades than my brother and sister for sure) and was the first person to graduate from college on my dad's side of the family...

So...not sure what the deal is, honestly.

Maybe they see you as so competent and independent that they think their gifts would not mean anything to you?

I recently asked my dad if he would be willing to pay for half the cost of a new laptop and I would pay for the other half with money I had saved up...

He said he wouldn't pay for half, but I could work and earn enough to pay for the whole thing myself working extra hours at his company...

My sister on the other hand just got a new digital camera (the first one she lost, the second one she broke) and a new phone...she didn't have to work for any of it, either...Somehow I don't know how that works.

So I'm working for my dad right now to earn money for a new laptop so that I will have internet access when I move to California.

I think that you should just be happy that your family is well enough financially to be able to pamper your sister like that.

You're doing alright yourself, no need to be jealous of some materialistic gifts you haven't received... I'm sure that your parents will help you out with anything if you ask them to.

Just don't let this bother you, honestly... you're an adult now and you will always be more independant than your sister for the life experience you have already gained... so be happy with that.
