I hear a lot of things about how old 60's hippies were just dirty drug addicts who lived in absolute filth, fucked anyone, committed crimes for drugs and were bad people. From what I perceive about the old hippie culture was an awesome spiritual, peaceful time with awesome music and happiness. I know the truth has got to be somewhere in between these two things but I don't know what it really was.

People say that all hippies died out after the summer of love and all that are left are just posers. They say the Haight is dead and before all it was was gross, heroin addicted criminals.

    What do you think?

I think all the hippies got stuck in the tar-pits, or a comet came down and killed them all.

The credo of the HIPPIE will never die whilst there is rebellion within the youth, conscience of the 'middle years' and character of those with the experiences of conviction - meThinks :)

I don't think you could really categorize every person during that period as this way or that way, I'm sure there was someone on both sides of the street who seemed to belong to the stereotype

a hippie is not a drug addict or gross. a hippie is someone who truly believes and is dedicated to love and peace. they go out of their way to save and help others, but just like you they are human and they make mistakes. no one is perfect. but i am a hippie soo yeah

    Dear Lineoutt,

You posted you're pretty serious question under the section of:
Find solutions to your problems by asking our wise old hippies
    Message

Unfortunately, all that I see in response is a bunch of smart ass comments from people who seem to range from 20 to 36, and who seem to fine it entertaining to belittle other people.
I could hardly call this being cool.

A Hippie would never do that. It is so very intermedeate school to put someone else down. A Hippie would offer to help you out. A Hippie would sit with you at the camp fire under the stars and tell you true tales of old, and explain things to you, and listen to your questions, seriously.

    What they said.

Church of the Good Earth 1963 and Beyond
Here's 264 pages of real people of the Largest commune in the Haight Ashbury in San Francisco. In the last pages you will see very real current caring with folks in this group who still hang-out together on-line and in person. This is Real. You can take it to the bank.
Randomly clicking through the back-page numbers you will find all manner of stories and the connection of these folk. Yes, these ARE hippies. Not just a name.

    http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?p=6851981#post6851981&f=248

These folks are hippies. Some are lovers and some are outlaws and some are peace-niks, and all of them are FREE.

Being hippies to me is about people being truthful, and honest, and open to others, (What we use to call being REAL.) and up-front caring and always open to love to all.

REAL is a concept that should really be brought back to all of us.
Real meaning being a REAL Person. Somebody that you either would admire and would hang-out with as a brother or a sister, would be REAL. Someone who is not there, would be called Not REAL. This is the MEASURE.

It is true that there has always been what we would call counter-cultures. Even the Ancient Greeks and Romans had them.

    # We've had the Hipster with early jazz and blues in the thirties and forties. They snapped their fingers, and they wore double breasted suits and very broad brimmed Panama Hat's. This is where we get the term HIP or HEP, like in Hep Cat or HIPFORUMS, the name of this Web Space.
    # Next were the Beats. Especially in the Village in New York and in San Francisco. This was, Like, after 1945 World War Two and through the 50s and further. They are where we got "Like" and "Cool" and "Man", "Cats" (Man, Like, in sayin' he is a Cool Cat) and "Kittens". The thing was jazz and taking it way out there.
    # In the late 50s and early 60s there was a big Folk thing going on. It was a break away from the Elvis Presley classic 50's music that was merely a teen culture. Mamas and the Papas, Joan Baez. Look them up.
    # Early 60s, the Surf Beat and the English Beat. Some of the weird clothes and styles and longer hair came from the London Carnaby Street look that was all over the magazines after awhile. This English Look started popping up in the U.S. in the big cities, S.F. N.Y. L.A.

Note: That in all of these times some people didn't do drugs and some people did do drugs. Each scene seems to have had it’s drug or drugs of choice. Those people who chose to use things like heroin, usually fell into a coma and out of the scene.

It seems that for those that did drugs, marijuana seemed to always be in the mix of first choice drugs.

Now the thing that was brand new at the advent of what would become known as “the hippie scene” was, the birth control pill (1961). Suddenly young adult women had the option of going out and doing as they choose. Something brand new in the whole wide world. A human First! Doing as they choose. When they want. With whom they choose.

What was then cool and hip was the old Beat scene and jazz, the current Folk scene, and the splashing brand new English scene. Can you imagine three now things all at once? In both music and lifestyle? Right now we don’t even have one thing.

In the late 50s came the Electric Guitar. A brand new Thing. And many musicians wanted to try them out. Electric Guitars cost a fortune at first. All of them did try them out, all at the same time, because that time was when they became kind of affordable. So, electric music came on all AT ONCE. Avalanche.

    # So, we have more newly set free young women out looking to get some, and dancing to the new electric beats of English, and folk and jazz and maybe drinking and smoking pot and learning to run wild and loving it all, and along comes L.S.D. 25. WWWHOOOOAA! “Didn’t se that one coming.”

    WHOLE NEW BALL GAME!

“Man, Look at all of the colors.” That’s a game changer.

Okay? And marijuana was illegal but LSD wasn’t. Are you getting the picture?

    The term hippie.
    # The story that I heard, way back and when, was that even back earlier in the Haight Ashbury District of San Francisco there were four guys walking up a street, up hill, past a row of old Victorian style houses. They were all dresses up looking like dandy dudes wearing bright colored psychedelic long sleeve dress shirts and fancy bell bottom pants and belts and wearing vests and Beatle boots and sun glasses. I was told that they must have been in a band because their hair was even longer than the “mop top Beatle’s haircuts” of the day.

    # On one of the porches of one of the Victorian houses was an older black gentleman. It was said that he was a nineteen-forties Hipster. The story goes the he was a hot saxophone jazz player and a life long cool hip man. From his frame of reference, as an old hip cat, he must have thought of these young 20ish guys as some kind of trying to be hip. Traipsing or tripping or jaunting up the street. Being all dandy. Looking like young hipsters.

    So, he said,
“Well, ain’t you all just hippie dippy trippy dandy.”

Well, they must have retold the tail and the story must have gone around. And somehow the hippie part of the tag, stuck. That is where I am told the name hippie came from.

    Hippie, meaning young newbie Hipsters.

Do hippies still exist? and are they gross?

I exist. And a whole lot of hippies exist in many major cities across the globe and in the country sides everywhere. as well.

    and are they gross?

It depends on what in your opinion Gross is. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Here's a google search for: 1960s pictures of young hippies. and then clicked on images.
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi

Here's a link to my photo's. How gross am I? And I'm an old guy. Judge for yourself.

Just ask yourself, if hippies were so gross and fucked up, how come they are so epic?

Hippie is just a name. The concept of the free spirited outsider has existed for centuries. The name Hippie just got put on it at one particular time. The concept never died and will always be with us as it always has been. Listen to the wind hoss.

As for Haight Ashbury. The place is a fucking shopping mall with dope dealers now. C'est La Vie.

It seems the movement just found me and I liked it. Lots of smoke, lots of peaceful easy ladies, the greatest music, the greatest friends. It followed me into the university campus and for a while after ward.

I found my life partner in that world, we got married, have been for 37 years

I like one of the early posters comments.

I still don't know what Being a hippy is all about but peace and love has got to be part of it.

Jesus was a hippie. Dude was rocking in the free world long before Haight Ashbury and the San Fran crowd.

Hippies still exist. They're just harder to find because it isn't as popular a trendy movement as it became in the 60s. Those who lived and believed in the lifestyle (and new ones) still do. But the reason hippies seem to be few and far between is simply because the clothing has changed and the scenesters changed with it.

To answer the OP's question, yes they still exist, some of them. I live in a community that was a focal point of the "back to the land" movement in the early 1970s, and some of those old hippies are my friends and neighbours. They are getting a little old and frail now, but they have never sold out. They don't all do drugs, though I suspect that there are several "plantations" in the back 40. No, they aren't gross.

Some of their houses are funky and would never pass building code inspections, because they thought running the garden and actually living off the land was more important than putting handrails on the stairs. Some of their houses are gorgeous because they are brilliant artists who learned woodworking and wanted to live in a work of art that was also a work of heart. Some of them have built geodesic dome homes, invented eco-cabins, and published how-to manuals to help other hippies. Some of them are technological geniuses who have built their own wind power installations from scratch and who live off the grid. Some of them are potters and weavers and painters. Some of them are farmers and market gardeners. One old hippie couple I know is building a log cabin on 120 acres of recovering clear-cut forest.

All of them are the kindest, most honest, most loving, caring people you would ever want to meet. They are the real thing. They don't make headlines because they are good news, and good news doesn't sell.
