do you have a duty to help the poor if so why ? ,if you have a country like haiti where people are starving and yet they have a exploding population should you send them food aid even though all that will happen is they will overshoot the carrying capacity of their country to a greater degree.

do you think you should have no borders and so the population of haiti should be shipped over here but if for say religious reasons they continue their population growth and cause our population to get to say 400 million so that the people here are all starving would that be a good idea .

china was a poor country with a long history of famine but they have a one child policy haiti could do the same

If you look at what happened in easter island you had a country that went into overshoot then went into die-off and cannibalism and really it didnt effect the rest of the world at all .

Is the best plan for sustainability strong borders so that people either get to be able to live within the carrying capacity of their country or go into die-off until they do .

I may have asked this before but do you think we should have a one child policy

to the people who think we need more immigration to stop the uk population from declining http://globalpublicmedia.com/dr_albert_bartlett_arithmetic_population_and_energy

listen to this over and over until you understand it .

a lot of people believe the sustainable population for the uk is 35 million it could be a lot less than that without fossil fuels what do you think

The thing about open borders is, however, that they work both ways, in fact, they work all ways. Some people would travel, some wouldn't, some would go back, some wouldn't. Open borders would not cause a sudden plague of 3rd world migrants.

Also, I agree with you that we need to lower our population. But not through something as drastic as a one child policy. The amount of horrible side affects of the one child policy in china are enough to put any country off. Obviously they wouldn't happen in such a degree, but I would still strongly oppose that much interference in peoples lives. Family planning programs are the way to go.

Ive only just woken but agree totally with Fin. But i really do see a major overpopulation problem here and i do think the message needs to be hammered home a lot harder and some kind of family planning should be compulsory for everyone to attend many times throughout their lives and the point emphasised more ins chools etc. Personally i dont see a reason for having more than 2 children but then i suppose i wouldnt be here to say had a ban been in place back in the 80s:rolleyes:

And uhm, ill come back here after breakfast:)

If you look the population of Haiti is comparable to the population of New Jersey and their land masses are about the same so i do not see the need in population control. The problem in Haiti is their government, these people are given no social services and no way to gain an education. I believe it is at least a 80 percent illiteracy rate. The people there are striving for a fair wage, right now its an average of 2 dollars a day. The people there are incredibly hard workers and amazing artisans.

If there is anything we can do to help, it would be to push our government to do something to help, yet I do fear that may never happen with the way our government seems to work. The individual aid organizations are great and do great things but, only so much can be done and this just does not apply to Haiti, there are many countries in the exact same situation.

We pay taxes to help the less needy in the UK in theory (NHS, unemployment benefits, housing benefits) .. and the government give our money to the needy abroad i.e. 10 mill to Burma (U.S. gave a couple of mill??... work it out per head) It's a polital dance though. Most of us give extra cos we either can, and / or feel compelled to do so...

Which country helped the UK when we had all the floods last year?

But yes, we should help those who need it when we can.

    Love Clairexxx
