have you seen this article? http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0838/is_128/ai_n8692158/print i was thinking about starting a peace file for my kiddo even though we're in canada. i've got a baaaad feeling about this
I don't believe that this is of any value if they REALLLY need soldiers. Look at Nazi germany. There was no such thing as a CO. If you were, you were sent to concentration camp. In the end, they even sent children into the war. This is stupid to believe that a portfolio like this will help you. In a purely democratic republic, yeah. But in the US democratic freedoms are getting smaller and smaller.
I read a similar article in Mothering Magazine. It is a very good article. I keep a CO file for my 3 older children. I hope it will help if/when a draft happens again. It makes me ill that the rich and the children of those in power rarely if ever go, but everyone else dies for THEIR war.
thankfully, my children are girls. not likely anyone in my messed up family would pass the physical anyway. Dad got 4F when he was drafed for VietNam.
If the draft is ever reopened, I doubt it will be limited to just youg men. I would think young women without children would be subjected too (I, of course, would never be subjected, because I'm not i great shape, and lets just say I'm too big a target...). This whole thing is making me all stressed - I need to call my sweet little brother and make sure he has all his documentation in order! (eek!)
I don't see how they could draft women. All the girls would have to do is get pregnant and get out of it. Can't have them puking on the battlefield, now, can we? Noooo, they need all the childbearing wimmin at home makin more cannon fodder!!
My grandfather was 17 when he got drafted (in Germany) for ww2. His family got him out of it somehow thank god. I don't know who they paid off or what the details are, but he didn't have to fight. Anywho, my girls are still fairly young, but we all have german citizenship so if things get too crazy here, we can just leave.
I agree. If they ever drafted women, all you would have to do is get pregnant and you'd get to go home. Thats what I would do. I would have babies back to back to back for as many years as the war went on. Fuck going to war.
i'm starting a file for myself too. it's entirely possible for women to be drafted with the gender equality laws that we have now. and i wouldnt want to get pregnant to avoid a draft, for many reasons. the first reason would be that women in the service only get a short period of time with their newborn before they're expected to go right back to duty. no way in the world would i be able to leave a baby behind to fight some stupid war. i'm the kind of mama who breastfeeds until my kid can tie his shoes. haha
In 2004, people were convinced that, should Bush get re-elected, he'd reinstitute the draft within 6 months. He didn't. And now? Bush is an idiot, but he's not stupid enough to reinstitute the draft now, when he's even having trouble keeping the conservatives of America on his side. His approval rating is 29%, and, at this point, they're not likely to rebound. If he reinstituted the draft, there would be a fucking rebellion.
Quick question: (I tried to look this up, but couldn't seem to find aything...) After a young man has already registered for the draft (because he didn't think he had a choice) is there a way for him to go back and register as a CO, if he gets together all the proper documentation?
I wouldn't put anything past this whack job we have in office right now. What I've heard is that both men and women will be drafted. We have a file for Dakota. It has pictures of him at peace rallies, a picture of him carrying a sign saying to impeach Bush, pictures of him in his conscientous objector t-shirt, and words to some of his favorite songs. Everything to show that he is being raised as a CO and didn't just make this choice to get out of the war. Of course, he's only 3 but I don't think you can start too soon on this. For the kid who registered for the draft and wants to change his status, tell him to contact the War Resister's League. They have a website but I don't know what it is off the top of my head. Do a goggle search on them. They have trained counselors to help people with issues like this. Also, keep all your passports active. After you're drafted is too late to try to renew one. Dakota still has his Guatemalan passport, but then he'd be more likely to be drafted there. I hope his CO file is all he needs. Kathi
Not being "in great shape" or being big will not protect you from the draft, if there is one. Getting a 4F is VERY difficult. My father had asthma, and they still took him. Sometimes, diabetes is protective, cancer, (but usually only until you recover) deafness, blindness (not "legally blind" if it can be corrected by corrective lenses or surgery) or having serious walking problems. I am going to find out for sure.
Oh My God. I tried several search engines, and everything that may have helped my was "file not found" or found NOTHING about the definition or requirements for 4F. Here's the scary part. I called the FUCKING ARMY. (OK, I thought I would go straight the source.) I said I was writing something on 4F deferments. The person I got immediately asked "What media outlet are you from? What is your name and where are you?" I said I had every Constitutional Right not to answer that question, but that I was writing on 4F and CO work. (She didn't know what CO work was.) I was put on hold (they were probably putting a track on my phone line) and then she came back and said 4F was "only" for the draft, and something about "physical impariment" ect. That isn't true, but I didn't tell her that so I told her, nicely, instead of just reading HER definition to me , but I wanted something in writing, and if she would kindly give me a website or a periodical which described 4F and it's specifics I would appreciate it. She then says, "If you leave your name, address, SS number, phone number and who you are working for, someone will call you back and help you." (George Orwell?) I said, "I don't think so. We do have a Constitutional right to privacy in this country, although it may be something you may not have been taught. I am NOT leaving my name, I can call back later, when the person is available." She goes, "Well, they (WTF?) want you to leave your information, so someone can get back to you. Can you do that? It is really important." What the fuck do they care about what I am writing? So I said, "NO, I will not leave any personal data with you. I pray YOU can get out of there as fast as possible and get your life and your mind back. I will maintain my privacy as long as those people in the White House alllow it, and hopefully after that. I pray you can find your own mind. God Bless you. And I hope you can get out of there before there is nothing left of you. Good Bye." And I hung up. fucking facists So, I can't find the info on the net, or from the Horse's Mouth, so to speak. Fuck them all.
my kiddo has asperger's and i'm still concerned about this. on one hand i feel like he should be safe from this crap bc of his diagnosis but on the other hand, he soooooooooooo stinkin smart that they'd loooooove to have him on their payroll.......
Every male in the US is required to sign up for the draft as soon as he turns 18 years old. Don't ever underestimate the power of government... They'll fuck you every time.
Maggie, that is really scary! and these exact things make me believe that a CO Portfolio is probably worth bullshit. :-(. I am not against making these things, hell, if there's only 0.5% a chance that they will keep a kid out of the mill, theire all worth it, but if it's even hard to not being in there with phyical problems, they will take shit for people that have a conciencous thing about it :-( this is from wikipedia, but the last sentence sounds like an option Class 4-F: Registrant not acceptable for military service. To be eligible for Class 4-F, a registrant must have been found not qualified for service in the Armed Forces by a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) under the established physical, mental, or moral standards. The standards of physical fitness that would be used in a future draft remain undefined. Openly admitted homosexual men are not allowed to serve in the American military
