I was chatting with a friend yesterday who decided he wanted to remove Cornwall, steal all the good bits and add them onto Devon and then send the rest of the land to Spain where other lazy people live. I was horrified at this idea and asked for his reasonings. He said that Cornwall only ever do things for Cornwall, they snub the rest of England and are backward. In my argument I was like, but Cornwall's pretty and there's surf and it's chilled in Cornwall and pasties and what about tourism... he responded Cornwall earns money off tourism for Cornwall, they don't give anything back, Devon is pretty too, Devon has surf and Devon makes better pasties. Anywhos... I want to kno what you guys think.
Thing is, if we did that we'd have to cut out various streets and villages too. I mean, even in fair olde Pontefract we have small sections that are so far up their arses they can see their own kidneys.
yeah, that happens everywhere innit. Plus, if it was purely on snobbery, we'd have to get rid of Bath, Cambridge, London, South Hams in Devon etc etc
I love the perspective of the Cornish in that they do believe themselves Cornish and probably not even English secondly. Nothing wrong in working to live instead of living to work.
they even have their own flag! I like the Cornish..my step-family are Cornish Also, they are trying to get people to start speaking Cornish again which is wicked!
I don't think we should give Spain anything; if you gave them Cornwall, you'd soon be reading frightful abuse stories about puffin fighting, and piskie dancing....
actually, at first he was going to give it to the US, but instead decided that because the Cornish are apparently lazy, they should be sent to Spain.
Ask him where he thinks the taxes go too that Cornish people have to pay lol Does he think they go to some sort of seperate Cornish government in Truro? Maybe some Cornish people feel marginalised and resent the rest of England because the wages in Cornwall are really shit and tourism is swallowing the traditional cornish way of life. Did he consider that?
PS My niece was born in Truro. My family have been friends with Cornish families in St.Ives for about 20 years...Some are practicing witches and pagans. Unfortunately those traditional religions are dissapearing. I can understand the resent cornish people feel sometimes, especially the older generations who have watched there homes change dramatically over the years...You walk around St.Ives these days and it's being swallowed by surfing shops and all the traditional pasty shops, fudge shops pubs and the general vibe is dissapearing quickly. Everything changes yes, but I can understand where they are coming from. Despite the tourism the wages are still very low and the cost of property is rising all the time. The money doesn't go back into Cornwall, that's a lie...
hehehehehehe. people are the same all over. we all have to have someone to complain about and mock. makes us feel better.
Well I might put forward the argument that I have to pay loads of money in water rates £650, to keep the beaches clean for the rest of the UK to come and enjoy. Loads of our taxes go on building roads so the rest of the UK can come and go easily at the weekend. All the housing is bought by london for the weekend so no locals can afford them. Worst wages in the UK. Yep cut us of and send us to Spain, goodbye and good riddance.
That ain't only happening in Cornwall, that's going on in Devon too. We are also contributing to the A30 extension etc, we have to pay South-West Water an absolute fortune and we also pay for beach combing/new coastal defences etc. We are also affected by the 2nd home owner syndrome, which is why our taxes are so high and our jobs the lowest paid in the country. We are also paying loads of forest rangers due to the huge gippo colony living up on Holden Hill.
The Cornish are very closely related to the Bretons in France. Surely if anyone was going to mutilate a piece of our country, parts of Cornwall should go to Bretons in France. Apparently they want their own country and don't see themselves as French.
yeap, Cornish are very closely related to Brettons. Infact the Cornish language, which everyone thinks is from Celtic languages like Welsh etc is actually very close to Bretton.
