Probably because it tends to be a private thing. I don't want to hear my friends talk about it, not because society tells me not to but because they are my friends and I am not interested in when and how they pleasure themselves.

It's always seemed strange to me that women are able to be far more open about masturbation than men are. They even have Ann Summers parties (or equivalent for other countries) where they sell various sex toys & openly discuss the merits of different vibrators / dildos etc., wheras with men, the simple suggestion of someone actually masturbating is always associated in a derogatory fashion (i.e. Wanker, Jerk, etc.).

Just why is it used as an insult when it is something we all do?
