I know that sounded rude lol, but seriously, do any of you crafters work other jobs? I work about 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, and with only 2 days off (not usually EVER together) i can NEVER find time to sew, or even get motivated to sew. It drives me insane.

Yep. I dont work nearly as much as you do. The budget is so tight, their cutting everyones hours and still cutting away! Christian stores suck! The president or whatever is rich but he wont share. I thought christians were suppose to share?

I have to work there and bust my ass and deal with stupid old ladies and stupid men who think they know everything. Telling ME of all people to get scanners and stuff. Like telling me to get a scanner will do anything. Im not the one who is keeping us back in the 80s with the stupid old cash registers.

And doing refunds is a bitch. Theres all this paperwork they have to fill out. They get pissed very easily.

And they all bring their kids into the store and their kids just freak out the minute they walk in. Screaming and crying and urrrgghh! i hate it!

And they all think they know whats on sale. They say "oh but theres a sign right by it that says 50 percent off" yeah well did you read anything else on the sign other than that!? Its only a select group of items!

    I HATE HOBBY LOBBY!

I want a new job RIGHT NOW!

hey i work... at a coffee shop in portsmouth. its where i am most of the time if not off visiting people and/or seeing shows. whenever i feel inspired or want to make something for a special occasion is when i kick my ass in gear and make some kynd threads for myself and most times other people too. its all about sharing the love....
but yeah, sometimes when i get wrapped up in it all i find it pretty hard. oh well, do what you gotta do i guess. i wish i could craft full time like some of the other mamas on this site, but they have fulltime jobs too, with their kids. i know when i was a nanny there was nooooo way i could get any work done around kyds cuz they demand sooo much attention. it would be like a stop and go throughout the day, causing me to lose my chain of craft thought and then id fuck it up. idk, whatever... i try to have crafting be a soothing event, not stressful.
    peace and love

I don't have a J.O.B. (just over broke...) blah! I worked as a customer service rep in a company in a cubicle for almost 4 years and it really turned me off to the idea of working for anyone besides myself, I was probably the hardest worker they and I also worked on the department web site for free but they refused to pay anyone any more than $8 an hour So I quit, and then on top of that if I wanted health insurance for my family it was almost $150 a week! All I do is sew and run my website well, besides chase, feed and entertain two kids and a dog all day. Sewing is really something I love to do, the only job I have ever done that doesnt keep me stressed out once I am finished working.

I work about 30 hours a week, which is why I don't sew much. I work for a non-profit drop out prevention program. I liked it a lot in the beginning, but it has gone downhill. A new company took over and changed all the rules--and cut my pay, while they gave my supervisor a big fat raise (we are the only employees). I don't work enough to get benefits, so no insurance, no vacation. But, I have decided to quit! I'm going to put in my notice today! I don't know what I will do, but at this point, I don't even care. :)

 I have 4 kids. 'nuff said.

lol, seriously..I cannot go get a 'real' job because the freakin cost of childcare would practically cut my paycheck right out. It sucks because we live in a horribly expensive area and are so broke ass poor. :( My husband works his ass off and I feel so bad that I can't do more to help him. We both had really good jobs working in the next village over from us at a motel that my mom ran. Total cool job..I brought my kids, dog, even my sewing machine with me. My husband was the pool guy/maintenance man. We were making mad cash...then along comes Hurricane Isabel. It took the ENTIRE motel..my parents home..and almost my parents. :(

Since then it has been a constant struggle. Sucks ass.

okay, I know I am the odd "man" out here, but I work 40 hours a week, 4 days a week (2 12 hour shifts and two 8 hour shifts), so I get 3 days a week to catch up on things and do yard work, plus whatever I'm working on. And I'm a full time college student. I still manage to find time most evenings to do a bit of beadwork, and I've been sewing a TON of hiking gear lately (stuff sacks, tent, backpack) and trying to make a few gifts for people.

Once school starts back, I doubt I'll have much time though.

I'm just finishing a full time art course at college, but I don't have a job at the moment. I'm currently applying to some full time jobs for when I finish as a fitness instructor, hopefully I'll get one!

I just quit the part time job I had for years at the local market, to focus on homeschooling my daughter. I don't get paid, but this is the best job I've ever had. ;) I love being at home teaching my daughter, playing in the garden, raising my ducklings, cooking meals from scratch; basically just being a SAHM. I'm trying to help out financially with my sewing and crafts, and try to save money whenever I can. My hubby just got a new job with better pay and lots of hours, so hopefully things won't be so tight anymore. We're trying to save up to go to the Shambhala Festival in August and Amsterdam in April 2006.

I bartend. Which makes you really not care for ppl at times. I worked for a corp. at one time and that really sucked, but now I mostly work at friends bars or parties. During the summers I usually sew dresses for bridal parties (flower girl, bridesmaids), but that's getting pretty old too. Sooner or later I'll have to grew up, finish college, get a real job, cross my legs and be a *lady*.

I'm jobless and broke. I mow the lawn, but thats just once every two weeks or so. I'm planning on going to some craft fairs soon though (I went to one a few weeks back, and I broke even... than made three whole dollars! :D) Seriously though, people really need to look into all the fees involved in craftmaking before they whine to the artists about the prices being too high. I mean, labour, materials, renting a table at a craft fair... it can get kinda expensive... besides, $5.50 for a pair of gemstone earrings IS NOT very expensive! Aww well... a loty of the other crafters there said that the first three fairs were usally the hardest.
I used to take plush comissions (I love making plushies!), until I realized that very few people are willing to pay me well for such comissions. Now I just do it as more of a hobby.
As a side job I do crystal healing and reiki, yet refuse payment for it (yet if I didn't refuse payment I'd be loaded... but I'd feel guilty getting paied to help people... it's a simply duty which I must fufill, not a way of aquiring materialistic products.)

    Hello to all.

To answer the question about jobs, I am blessed to be able to work for myself doing something I love and enjoy a great deal. I sew for a living. I have been making clothing and prayer rags for many years now. I decided a long time ago that I wanted to do something that allowed me to express my feelings, beliefs and creativity.

I enjoy seeing all the beautiful work that people post here on the board. It's great to see the spirit and creativity that grows here. Keep up the wonderful work, no matter what it is you choose to do.

    Love and light,

    Hipmoon

I work at a beach...only in the summer. I worked at Jo-Ann Fabrics for sometime when I realized...wow this is ridiculous. Grumpy old women all day long...it gets hard to put up with. So i quit. I have been working at the beach for 6 summers now I mean I make good money there since ive been there for so long. I just sit in the nice weather outside all day...sure it gets boring if you dont bring anything to do so I just make like necklaces bracelets anklets ect. Its really nice and i cant complain. School in the spring and fall and working at the beach in the summer. I can live with that while im still at home :)

I second what Cre said about childcare. We figured that childcare for 3 kiddos, I would be working just to cover childcare. So DH works and I take care of our kiddos and home.

im with you 2...we were doing the daycare shuffle for years when i got canned from my job...i picked up a seasonal job @ the call center here for the Gap (oh the horror!!) last winter and am trying to do so again this year...I got laid off as i was just there for the holidays...that really was the best deal for us tho as far as me working cuz Lloyd worked in the mornings n then I went to work from 530pm-2am..sucked getting up to take the my oldest to school but it was a small price to pay for no daycare costs...money is supertight now but I was laid off so i get unemployment for 3 more months...so im here with the kids now and the future is uncertain as hell...i dont wanna go back to slaving for corperate america while someone else raises my kids and gets paid for it...so frustrating....
least for now i am home :)

They did a report on a news show once about the reality/cost of two parents working. Its not only the cost of day care but the cost of gas, wear and tear on a second vehicle, any clothes needed for work and then theres the cost of take out types of food or more expensive quick foods at the grocery store that you wouldn't have if someone was home cooking. That also doen't include the emotional costs that get paid as well. But the woman in one couple they did it on actually only ended up clearing 50.00 a week for all her efforts once all the other expenses were factored in. I think the show was 48HRS.

btw, I work too, but I don't get nearly as much done as I would like. I go in spurts and do better when I have a muse.
