No.... dreadlocks do not change how quickly hair grows.

I thought no, because instead of growing straight out, its instantly pulled together near the root?

    well
    the full answer is
no it doesnt grow any faster
in fact the overall growth measured root to tip is slowerr because it goes in so many crazy directions
    however

to give the full answer you also gotta examine root to tip growth over years
this is where it evens ouit even passes straight hair growth
combing haor causes split ends that require frequient trims
even if the intentions not to cut the hair shorter, u loose about 1/2 inch in trims 4every 2 months avferage
so a foot of growrth is cut in half by loss to dammaged ends

i think if u examine all factors over long periods of time dreads do on average become longer faster
(its relative though, a freind who started his dreads at the same time as me, his are just past his shoulders, mine are way past my toes
so different ppl's hair grow at wildly different rates

I figure the weight being put on the roots would get it to grow faster. Mine seems to be growing faster but I'm also considering the fact that dreads shrink so it doesn't look as if your dreads are growing longer. I don't know the absolute answer but this is my opinion based on my hair which grows very slow when not in dreads. Note that I never really cared about if I had split ends or not so when I was *attempting* to grow my hair out it was never cut unless I cut a good 3-4 inches off.

Yikes, I have dreads AND split ends! Perhaps that will explain why my hair hasn't grown much at all the past year.

nah thats duree to shrinkage the 1st year they will shrink more then grow till theyre mature then begin to grow
split ends alone dont affect growth, only trimming them off often does

Before dreading, my hair seemed never to grow. It took ages to get beyond a certain length, because it would always eventually break. I stopped combing except for just once straight after washing to tidy it up, and some more growth began to show.

It had always seemed like my hair grew only at the roots but not at the ends lol. Since having dreads, obvsiouly the hair breakage thing doesn't apply anymore, so it's the most my hair hair has grown in years lol :D
Even though it may not technically be growing faster, in terms of appearance, my hair growth rate has gone up massively :)

Mine does seem to grow faster .. might be imagination, but since december 2007 they're like 17 cm longer at the roots (that's dreaded hair, so normal hair would be longer). So it must be about at least 25 cm. Well my hair never grew 25 cm in 1 year and a few months..
I put a piercing in to see how fast it grows. But at the other side of the piercing (tips) it shrank haha :p. My hair always grew fast

if you take the herb called horsetail, it promotes hair growth and bone density because of the silica (i think thats the ingredient). all hair is is dead red blood cells, so if you figure out a way to kill those cells faster with out killing yourself your hair will grow long quick :)

That sounded a lot like bollocks. Poo is partly dead red blood cells, not hair....

I believe hair mainly consists of a protein called keratin.

"Taking nutrients from the dermal papilla, the hair bulb generates new hair cells. As these cells move up through the hair root, they mature through a process called keratinization, fill with fibrous protein and lose their nucleus. When the cell loses its nucleus it is no longer alive. By the time the hair emerges from the skin it is merely fiber made of keratinized proteins." Linky

I would think the one thing to help hair grow would be vitamins or eating a lot of fruits and vegetables. But who knows

my hair was always pretty short when young, doubt i ever got past 4-6 inches
if my hair was undreaded, it would be roughly 17-20 feet ast a rough guess
ofcourse undresded hair would have a very hard timer getting that long, but the point is, its roughly a foot a year (undreaded) dreaded it might be only 4 inches a year
but i doubt mine ever grew more then 2-3 inches a year b4 dreading

What about dreads and male pattern baldness? Will old dudes lose their dreads?
