I just can't get myself to go to bed
    too many thoughts swirling around
    am happy, not stressed,
    but thought paths keep crossing

happens to me sometimes. only thing I can say that works. Think about 1 particular thing that you can imagine or recite perfectly. a movie, a story a game, anything that you know by heart or could do blindfolded. and keep focusing on that, if it's a movie go into as much detail as you can in each scene from beginning to end. if it's a game, think of a flawless way to win.

My mind often runs wild and I ponder until I'm a mess.

I'm a creative genius in those moments before sleep. It's so annoying! I can never retrieve that in waking moments.

The moment I turn off the lights to go to sleep, my mind starts reeling as well. It's extremely annoying, and sometimes I've spent hours just thinking and stressing out about things. I've found that yoga helps, but it still happens every once and a while.

Ive had that problem all my life. I have always been a night person, its like my brain really doesnt start working right until evening time. Melatonin has done wonders for my sleep, it helps alot.

well stilling the internal dialog is one of those things that has to be allowed rather then trying to force. trying to force the mind to shut up itself creates stress, as does trying to force it to focus one particular contexts. relaxing occurs quicker with the mind is simply allowed to freewheel rather then trying to either stop or focus it. at least it works that way for me.

I agree. Imagine your thoughts are leaves floating down a stream and just let them slowly drift by.

Every night. Getting stoned before bed usually helps out, though.
