I feel the same way most of the time. I just want to be out and living, rather than stuck in my normal life. I mean, the things I am close to are quite perfect, but there's so much more I could feel and experience, so much more to make me happy out and about, especially away from the urban lifestyle and into the wilderness.

There's too many comforts here for me to leave just yet, and things I've started I feel I need to finish (and want to finish) such as university. Not so much to get a job at the end of it, but because I find it interesting and I like learning.

I guess there are many ways to make enough money to take my car with me, but its 560 a month with insurance so that may be a challange. I am in the process of obtaning my passport so cannot cross the border legally just yet. I take off every weekend but its still not enough lol.

I hear ya..every weekend when I go do my thing and get away from the nine to five grind, I find myself thinking that I'll only be truly happy if I find a way to do that all the time and not just on the weekends. People do it all the time, you just have to get past the nerves thing. I always use money as an excuse for why I haven't taken off but I know people do it every day and find ways to finance it, so it really boils down to just being an excuse. You could always trade your car in for a beater to get rid of those car payments...

On the road with a beater.. not sure about that one? My van is a 96 with lots of miles but I trust it. Got to have a dependable ride.

Do It!! just leave. if you dont you will regret it for the rest of your life. you always hear stories of people wanting to get away and experiance the world, but then they knock someone up or fallen in love or a career. and they regret it till the day they die.
Last spring i quit my job, travelled around bc then sold my car, filled up my backpack. met up with my buddy in calgary and hitchhiked North America. and now im making some quick cash back in canada and going over seas in the next few months or so.
But yes i highly recomend doing it. living like that you never stop learning and theres new neverending experiances. Good Luck!!

or if you do fall in love you could take your love with you like i did. finding some one dosnt mean you stop traveling. you could find some one who has more experience with it and that would help you out a lot.

Get prepared while you're waiting to get your passport and then head for warmer climates. It's much easier to enjoy your freedom when it's warmer. :)

As far as your fears, I have the same ones, but I've recently learned through experience that the universe will provide. It just does.

    Go.

Go for it Chuck. Last month I decided I had had enough of my current life and walked away from my corporate job and everything that goes with it. No more corporate lies, no more ass kissing, no more bullshit, no more 9-5, at least for now! I have given away, to friends and charities, almost everything I owned except for 6 or 7 bins of my favorite things, my camping gear and my bike. I sold my car for exactly what I had left on the loan and I am in the process of selling the house to a neighbor for a bit more than what I have left on the mortgage.

The next step is to buy a camper van with the profit from the house, load up the dogs and head out before the snow flies.

The most amazing part of the whole process is that as stressful as not knowing what lies ahead, my blood pressure has dropped a full 20 points and I have been able to get a full nights sleep for the first time in years.

i understand the urge to throw the key and go... but as others have said, a little careful planning and preparation pays off huge dividends

and try a trial run a two first.. a week.. then a month.. then see how heavy tha key feels in ya pocket

    Good point Chapter13.

This is my 3rd episode of 'throwing away the key'. The first time was a 2 week trip to nowhere that kept getting extended to the point where after a couple years I landed in a town that I really liked, found a small cheap room for rent and settled long enough to get a University degree. The second time was shortly after graduation and was supposed to be for a short trip to Asia which ended up being several years longer than originally planned. That trip I had an ultimate destination in mind and a goal that needed to be accomplished but once it was accomplished I was free to wander.

For me, the most important part of the plan is an 'escape plan'. Last time I went I had emergency money hidden on me that NO ONE knew about and that I never had to touch but had just in case I needed it and I had an open return ticket back to Canada in case I needed to come home. Some borders required proof of the return ticket before they allowed me to cross.

Ya for sure. but lots of people arent blessed with an amazing traveller. but im sure I will come across someone in my travels.

YES! that is right. if you take care of the universe while on the road, then the universe will take care of you. completely. That was one of the most important things i have learned so far from travelling.

Preparation is important. but when you go about planning something, alot of people believe it will go as they planned. wich it never does. But it is important to be prepared for anything, but an important thing to keep in mind while travelling is Be Spontanious!! Thats very important

If you're planning on ditching your car loan and taking that same car, that's fucked up, man. Grow up and take some responsibility instead of throwing it on your parents. You're 22 by your info over there, so you're old enough mommy and daddy shouldn't be cleaning up your messes anymore. Finish paying off your car loan, when the car is paid for, then you can feel free to take it and go. Otherwise at least leave the car with the people whose credit you're destroying so they at least have the thing they're paying for. There's nothing wrong with wanting a change, but if that loan isn't yours alone, then it's not your credit to ruin. If you can't/won't pay off the car in a timely manner, maybe you should trade it in for something you can pay off quickly. Don't fuck your dad over, he was nice enough to co-sign for you this time, what happens if you fuck yourself over and you need his help again?

very cool story, I applaud you. Do your friends and family think you're absolutely crazy?

Its funny that the fear of the unknown is not nearly as stressful as the monotony of day to day living. I live my life pretty much by the seat of my pants and I'm way less stressed out than I used to be when I was so focused on every little detail of my life going the way society taught me it should.

This is exactly what I want to do. I don't know if I could survive the 9-5 things. I've seen my mother do it: she hates it. And I've seen my father quit it all, travel for 4 months of the year, and live relatively stress-free (although he's hardly a respectable man in other ways).

There's a VW van for sale nearby with a built-in stove and room for myself and maybe a dog for company. If I wasn't busy with my degree, I'd be working my ass off for a year, saving, then getting out of here! Going to the mountains, or something.

I worked in Lake Louise for a summer, it would be great to do that again now that I'm older. I could camp there, canoe down rivers... then make my way south for the winter. Maybe meet up with two_dogs...

    Someday...
