How doable is dreading your own hair (twist n rip method)? I might do it tomorrow since my parents aren't gonna be home so I can get blazed and do it if I want. They've actually been bugging me about my hair, since it's so long right now, but I haven't mentioned the whole dreads thing. They're trying to get me to either get it cut or styled.
yes its possible, just get a wool hat and rub it around for about an hour to start the knotting. then leave it be until it knots a bit more. rinse, repeat. very easyy.
The way I interpreted twist n rip was that you take a section of hair, start twisting it with your fingers, and then starting at the bottom split the section in two and pull on the two pieces separately to force a knot toward the root, then keep repeating on the section until you reach the tip. Are you talking about the same method, or is this (the wool hat thing) something completely different? Or is my idea of twist n rip completely wrong?
You can do it, but it won't be easy, invite a friend or two too help you... It will make it a lot easier
I did, but it's not too clear on twist and rip. You even say so yourself. I actually haven't seen a clear description of it yet.
Just found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VimvRHBJTqw and then saw luxie's comment on it, so now I know I'm good to go. One question for luxie though - when you did yours, did you backcomb the roots first, or just do straight twist n rip the whole way?
no I did no backcombing. I just went with the natural sections of my hair and t&r it. It's definitely possible to do on your own, my best friend did all of hers and she has loads of hair! just prop up a mirror so you can see the back of your head. your arm will huryt after a while and you may not get it done all in one night (I get distracted easily though, don't know about you) good luck though!
yeah the wool hat way is a lil more natural than twist n rip, just cuz there isn't any twisting really, unless you call the wool hat part the twisting. the ripping comes when knots start to form a birds nest on your head, this is called progress.
I did all of mine by twisting and ripping I think there were only two that I had done by a friend and thats because my arms got tired
Ok, thanks a lot guys - that was really helpful. Especially smelly's diagram, lol. Hopefully I'll update my other thread with some pictures later tonight.
