Alright so I have some dumb rookie questions. I've been thinking about getting dreads for a year now but I was wondering, do they hurt if they accidently get tugged on? And if I think they're getting too long and I decide to take them out and cut my hair, would it be easier to redo my dreads again? I'm probably going to do them in about 4 or 5 months. My hair is only about 1 and a half inches long, I think I'll start by using knotty boy products. I would like to try doing them naturally but I just don't have the patience for that at this point. I know, I know. Everyone is going to say do them naturally but it won't change my mind. I have to make the mistake myself, lol. I've been getting the military buzz cut for three years of my short life time and I need something new pretty soon and dreads are the only thing that I really like besides head shaving. I'm only going to do them myself for 1-3 months then I'll let them knot up naturally. Oh and when I shower for the first few months how careful do I have to be with them scrubbing wise? Will they come loose easily? AND finally, I have a really thin gaunt face, I'm wondering how many dreads I should make. From what I've heard it's better to space them apart by 1 and a half inch but I think that I might be too far apart for me. I think ma...ybe I should make them about 3/4s of an inch apart so that I will have more thinnish dreads to begin with...HELP! lol.

I like thin short dreads, average medium length dreads and slightly thick longer dreads. I'm just hoping my hair dreads the way I want it to but if it doesn't I'll love em all the same. I have really weird hair though, it's going to be interesting to see how they lock up by themselves after I do a little self dreading. Oh, one more question. Is dandruff a big problem with dreads?
I know I used to have a lot of dandruff, I haven't had as much recently but I definitely don't want all that coming back when I get dreads.

    Any input is greatly appreciated!

The same as undreaded hair, only they get caught on much more. Like trees. Damn trees.

Why would you take them out if they are too long? And only to do it again?
If it is too long, cut to ideal length.

I was careful for like a day, but it doesn't matter in the long run. They will loosen and tighten and fall out and redread for the first few months whether you are vigorous in your scrubbing or not.

for some people it is, if you've had an issue with it in the past you probably will with dreadlocks. Search around the forum for info on dandruff and all that stuff.

Yo Dawg, I built a beehive on top of your pot of wax so you can wax while you wax and never run out.

You need to forget everything you think you know about dreadlocks. It is very clear from your post that you have no idea what your doing, which is fine because you came to the right place. DO NOT start anything with knotty boy products, that will be a horrible mistake and you will never have dreads. You need to read the FAQ on top of the first page and then come back. Your hair is very short anyway, so you don't have to worry about it yet. If you want to start now, buy some residue-free soap like dr.bronner's and start washing your hair, no brushing, etc. Not matter what you do it will be at least 1-2 years before you have dreadlocks.

I've been thinking about getting dreads for years. So yes I'm sure I want them.

Thanks to the ONE person who actually answered my question.

I'm not going to go around looking like a nerf head for two years.
Thanks, I'd rather have waxy candle sticks on top of my head.

And no, no ones hurting my feelings.
Everyone on the internet is a dick and I figured that out a long time ago.

Go ahead and start the "flaming" as you net nerds call it.
I won't be around to read it anyways and the only thing you know about me is...
Oh, nothing. Except that I will soon have a waxy candlestick haircut.

See I "flamed" myself, how funny.

    Thanks again, Sarah.

Is it just me or are a lot of people on the net these days overly sensitive? Gotta learn to take a little forum banter, people were just expressing there opinions

I thought that. My formula is that anyone who goes off Scriking their eyes out after their 1st or second post won't have dreads for long. On teh interwebs, it's just words, how you gonna handle being spat at and sworn at in rl if you can't handle an opinion? We iz teh charactorr bulderz
