Hi , while most my dreads start at about 3cm from the scalp it seems like the ones right above my ears (or sideburns) can start at as much as 6cm or 7cm.

    Is this common?

For the moment I keep them more or less under control with a bead on one dread and an elastic on the other but I was hoping you could give me a better idea.

    Thanks :2thumbsup:

The ones above my ears actually start way closer to the scalp than the rest...

Leave them be? They should dread with time.

I've always had bands on those two dreads as there's a lot of wispyness around there that messes with my head otherwise. As a result they're both very uniform/round and start very close to the root. But they were started very early (4" long hair), so I can't really help with how yours are!

Thanks for the responses. I also have a lot of white hairs coming out in that area which might be part of the problem. I get the feeling that white hairs have like a different structure from normal hair and are a little harder to dread.

I was also thinking it could be that face oil is getting on the dreads and loosening them up but I kind of doubt it because the dreads by my forehead hairline would have the same problem and it's not the case.

How about "braiding" the base by sticking the point of the dread through the base and pulling the whole dread trough several times at different angles? Is this something people do? I have thought about it many times but I don't dare to do it before I hear other peoples experiences.

I Just Passed The Two Year Mark And My Grey Sideburns Have Done Nothing...:(.

I Read On A Wax Promoting Site That Grey Hair Is Very Hard To Dread, So

I'm Going To Give Mine Another Six Months And If They Still Haven't Got Their Act

    Together I May Braid Them.

I Also Thought It May Be Face Oils But My Normal Coloured Hair Has Dreaded Well, And On

One Side, Some Of The Grey Has Been Sucked Into A Dread, Fingers Crossed It Will

Also Happen On The Other Side...:).

    Cheers Glen.
