I work for an old Scottish real estate investment company doing business in the US. I live and work in NYC. My company has a dress code for women but not for men. When I asked why I was told "gentlemen don't need to be told how to dress for business "'Our code says dresses and skirt suits, no pants suits. No bare shoulders and very limited jewelry. Skirt hems at or below the knee. I have a hard time with that one because I'm tall and can't wear tall women's clothes (too low waisted). I love my job and I have a secure position with them but this inequity bothers me. The fact is I would probably dress that way even if there was no code. What are your feelings girls? Here's how I usually dress for work. windows.jpg

I let no man dictate what I wear.

    and I’m a woman, not a girl.

As a secure man, I root out policies like these and abolish them as quickly as possible

Your outfit in the photo looks very nice and professional. I love wearing feminine outfits in general. I used to wear mostly skirts to work, coupled with minimalistic style blouse/tops.
Recently I am enjoying wearing pants more as I find them a lot easier to move around in. I work in a quite serious workplace, but we don't have very strict dress code as to pants vs skirts etc.

I think that if there is any sort of dress code it should be equitable all around. I don't think women should be required to wear dresses or skirts if they don't want to. Having a length requirement if someone chooses to wear them, I think is acceptable just because some might wear something too short to be considered professional although I think 2 inches above the knee is still acceptable for a professional setting. The jewelry thing is ridiculous unless someone shows up looking like Mr T, it should be fine to express yourself a bit. I think this dress code is too restrictive and that if your going to dictate specifics on what people wear you should do it for everyone.

    It should go both ways(male/female)...

I work in a mostly male dominated trade and company(gardening/landscaping).Most woman are in the office(own choice).........some on the workfloor(uniform clothing) :D

All of our companyrules apply to everybody. And we have pretty strict rules(shorts/hoodies/ect)

100 % agree. As a man of honor, it really bothers me that someone can treat another human without respect and equality. ... those in power either want to maintain or increase there power and dominance over others.

Well its an old Scottish business and my boss is the owner so naturally he can dictate what his women should look like. I can understand however why this would irritate some people. As I aid, I would dress this way anyway.

So why bother asking about it if your fine with it?

I do have a bit of a problem with the way you word things though. As someone else mentioned, you should not be referring to grown women as girls but then you put "he can dictate what his women should look like" ...yeah...NO, that's not ok.

And as far as it being an "old Scottish business", it's 2025 not 1950, businesses need to keep up with the times if they are going to stay relevant.

I understand Moon Goddess. At my age I tend to refer to younger women as girls. I;m so sorry that that offended you.
