My parents were hippies, and they now are part of the establishment, I am now coming of age, watch Easy Rider, Listen to dylan, neil young, the dead, beatles, etc... and am politically aware.

I suggested to my parents we move to india and sell the furniture.

    They dont understand.

I feel like the only person who is advocating what the hippies advocated in the 1960's.

WHy arent people dropping out of society?

I told my parents people should be dropping out and they dont understand me.

    We need to do something!

The war has been going on for nearly 3 years, 2200 are dead, 500,000 iraqis dead. Their are no politicians advocating bringing our brothers and sisters home.

Let's drop out, or start the revolution!!!

I am sick of waiting, we are wasting time!

Hey there kynd stranger ... I really like your idea of moving to India and selling furniture, thats a really cool idea. But I think that there are already alot of people "dropped out" and taking part in a revolution that is very much underway, it has been for ages. Not everyone who deicdes to "drop out" has to move to another country, or take up their own trade. I'm an individual, I let society know that, every single time I leave my house. It's in my hairstyle, my dress stlye, my car, my actions, my words. Instead of running away from society and making my point, I stay right here and let them all know where I stand. Rock on.

I to am tired of waiting. I'm dropped out to the extent that I can be right now, without the support of my peers that is. You need to understand though, the "Establishment" seems to have developed a new batch of tricky techniques to keep us brainwashed, obediant citizens. It seems to me, that very few people have the ability to see past the bullshit they are living in this country right now, and have a fear of dropping out. I don't know if its television or what, but there is some weird ass conforming going on that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm just as stagnant as everyone else, but I do know that I have only met 3 or so people that I can even attempt to conversate with on such matters. People protest the war amongst their friends and listen to 60s tunes, but it seems all fear "dropping out." This forum seems to be a wonderful place for planning such things, a place to find enough like-minded people...those with "a little dust over their eyes". We need to conquer the fear programmed into us, and follow our hearts. I mean realllllly try and see, how much of an individual are you really????

why do you need your parents to drop out of society, if you want to go ahead and do it. People arnt dropping out because it's not the 60's anymore, we should be looking for a new way to go against society, not trying to relive 40 years ago, because people dropped out then, and go ahead 40 years till now, and things are shit, so does dropping out really work?

If our minds were strong enough to see through their methods of control, perhaps it would.

Dropping out of society wont create peace.
If you want peace, creat it inside first.
You can have peace and live in this society.
But, spreading the peace can be difficult.
    Just be patient.

By your actions people soon learn!
Plant the seeds in there minds. It will grow sooner or later, albeit depending on there course in life.
The most important thing for us as individuals is to Slowly patiently plant The seed of life.
    Peace

by "dropping" out of society, you are merely ignoring the problem, not fixing it. Sure, leaving would be great, getting away from all this George Bush crap does sound nice, but, if someone doesn't stay here to raise awareness to what's going on, it will stay this way forever. The American government has become fascist, but so many people are being distracted by the dangling, shiny string the gov't is waving in front of them, with promises of freedom, equality, and all that, that they have no clue to what's really going on behind the scenes. Like Ghandi said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." If you bail out, you are just showing everyone else that it's a lost cause. We CAN make a difference in the way the government is running things, it's in the constitution, but nothing's going to happen if nobody does anything. How is moving to India and selling furniture going to take away the oppression here? The government WANTS people like us to leave, so that way only redneck right-wing idiots will control everything, and nobody will be here to oppose them. I personally don't think dropping out of society is helping, because they pay you no mind. Sure, they think you're annoying, but what powers can you really wield against a government like ours if you disconnect yourself from it all? I think there needs to be hippies willing to get into politics, basically infiltrating the system to bring it down.

I think we need to come together as the human race abandon all this political and modernisation bullshit and head back to mother nature.

I just turned 30; I have a wife and an almost toddler. I could not provide for them without being part of the establishment. The kids of the 60's are the parents of today, and for the first time in my life I understand why suburbia is what it is.

It's up to your generation to birth a revolution, but 'dropping out' is a weak idea. You don't want to remove yourself from society if your desire is to affect change. This 'whatever' generation has the conch next...but don't think about it as a sprint because its an endurance race. And remember that your parents--if they were supporters at your age--have experienced this kindred passion before but found themselves faced with some pretty hell-all decisions to make when they suddenly realized they had other lives to care for.
