So I've never picked up and instrument in my life, but i spend 90% of my time talking about/listening/looking for music. I really want to be able to do soemthign with music and i really enjoy drum machines. So can someone give me a basic rundown of a good one to start with and how to work them and the such?

Um. Drum machines aren't really an instrument.

Yeah, and they sound like shit. They're too over-reverberated like Phil Collins...

Woa-ho, y'all haven't seen Chick Corea's band live. He has a Jamaican dude who plays a strap on drum machine like there's no tomorrow. Anyway, Honk, you'll probably just have to go to a music store and beat on a few. The only one that comes to mind is the classic Roland TR-707. It's like 20 years old, but it's still hot. I think the Chemical Brothers use one:

P.S. Orsino, I can't agree with you more about the sad demise of Phil Collins. RIP one of the greatest drummers of all time. :(

LCD Soundsystem and New ORder both used drum machines, so did Suicide and those 3 bands are among my favorite.

Yeah. The drum machine is deffinatly an instrument. Sure it can be used to create really lame ass 80's shit, but drum machines are also the basis of almost all electronic music particularly as a hardware introduction to grid type programming and secquencing.... listen to squarepusher.....
