on eating meat I do and can live with it, its my choice what disapoints me and this is both sided I have seen on this site is the anti stance and the fact that people here have mentioned violence against example people eating meat I don't think is very positive instead why not share the positives by putting up in this thread why you have chosen omnivore, vegetarian, vegan. What do you like about your choice and why its important to you and the positives on your life embrace everyones view you don't have to agree but share you can only learn by information not words of anger. Some may have more info at their ends other may like me few words but all is important :)

What do you like about your choice: I enjoy the taste of meat, my favourite being pork pies but also like how it mixes with breads pastas etc

why its important to me: I'm not being something I'm not its part of what makes me and defines me

postives on my life: more range of choice less restriction by having to look at labels or asking at restaurants

    I do not eat meat.
I think eating the dead bodies of my brothers and sister will bring negative karma onto ones souls.
    Maybe that's just me though.
(I can tell I'm going to get some shit for this.)

Nathan, that's exactly how I feel- I believe there's a lot of negative energy that comes along with eating meat, especially killed under the circumstances they are.

if you eat meat be concious of what the animal went through to get to your mouth. when you really think about it, wouldn't you rather eat wild animals that had a good life and you killed yourself?

Buddhism doesn't quite hit on veggism does it?
I know the ethical part of it, but does it command anything?

I also do not eat meat. For me it is more important not to be a part of something so violent and disturbing than to have more choices or not to have to read labels. I dont want choices that require animals to be butchered and tortured in the name of good taste. Besides that, after going veggie, there is nothing tasty about the dead flesh of another being whom I love and respect. And I am also glad to see so many young people here who are veggie as well:)

Nathan I do believe Buddhism has a rule against killing, which is why a majority of buddhists are vegetarian

I don;t eat meat for quite a few reasons....I have a guilty consciounce about eating once-living animals, I care about my health, I don't believe in killing, I've seen a little too many PETA videos which scarred my fragile brain for life, and above all, ANIMALS ARE NOT ON EARTH SO WE CAN DO WHATEVER WE WANT TO THEM. Killing animals for food and torturing them like they are is one of the worst things anyone could ever do to another living being.

"Animals shouldn't have to die for your tastebuds!"

    My favorite Peta slogan..
    But yea, I'm a vegan.

well I'm glad I've got some response because I can see things I could of said to begin with, I have studyed both agriculture and horticulture and if we look at agriculture first there is free range and the animals locked up, yes I can say I disagree with the farming practices that force feed animals etc and there is of course a movement to free range practices but due to cost the what is considered the norm tends to be chosen it would be nice if govts globally adopted subsidys for all organic and free range procducts on the plus its good to see more and more place adopting better practices. Also for the most part when an animal is killed for food it is painless and they know nothing it is sad that some practices do inflict pain on animals.
Horticulture more simple no killing of animals that you love thats great but what you have to remember is that plants are living organisms like animals so of course they are being killed also now I don't know for a fact whether plants feel pain and know anything about their surroundings but the fact remains that for whatever you choose anything you eat was a living organism and you killed it or someone killed it for you so you can eat so I don't feel you can justify either as being more moral which is really the main point I meant by all this and that you couldn't live any other way which ever group you align yourself with

I'm veg*an (mostly vegetarian, but trying to go vegan)

What do you like about your choice:
It fits perfectly into my morality and the lifestyle I aspire to lead.
I made it all by myself :)
It is the first major choice I've made that reflects my beliefs rather than just going along with the norms (having been raised omni).

    Why its important to me:
Hard to explain really, but it is part of my identity, and such a big part of my life, in a positive way.
I can watch my rabbits know that in some way I am lessening the suffering, not just of their fellow creatures, but all animals.

    Postives on my life:
It prompted me to adopt companion animals (who incidentally are vegan)
Has in a way prompted me to question things, and helped me understand why I do things and whether they are the best choices.
Helped me to learn understanding and tolerance.
Allowed me to make many like minded friends

*Though I now feel Vegetarianism isn't really cutting it. Hence the attempts at veganism.

Did you ask why you could not survive on a vegetarian diet? There is a surplus of suplements that you can take orally to get you the vitamins and things that you would be getting out of meat, you can take One a day or there are B12 supplements that I know a lot of vegetarians take.

You asked if it's bad karma to eat meat just to stay alive. If you absolutely must eat meat you don't have to get it from the corner safeway (which, by the way, supported a lot of factory farming). There's bound to be a butcher that buys organic free-range meat that you can get, which I don't believe will put as much negative karma, but just the fact that we herd them up like our little toys for dinner is what makes it negative.

You also said it won't matter that you eat the meat that somebody else killed- you're the one supporting the killing of these animals by eating them.

I agree we've really screwed ourselves and the planet, because now there's very little hope that animals will ever again be able to live in nature instead of concrete boxes. The only reason we have so many animals is because we force them to breed- cows are artificially inseminated and as soon as they have their calf it's taken away and they're inseminated again. Same goes with pigs and sheep and whatever other animal you can think of. The reason there are so many animals is because we're playing god

It's called survival of the fittest. Do you think that animals that hunt are evil? Eating meat is natural, believe it or not.

Animals that hunt aren't evil. They have just as much a chance of dying when they go and attack their food, they don't herd up their prey for years and force-breed them and inject them with things to make them grow quicker just for their own pleasure.

True, but that's not what Chuck said. He simply said that killing animals for food was evil. I don't think that's true...

Shameless you're wise, you do not waste and you do return to the earth- that's good. I believe when chuck said "it's one of the worst things someone can do to another living being" he was referring to the worst thing a human could do to treat another living being like that.
