Mate, if you don't know what you are talking about, then don't comment. You didn't understand because these are lyrics from a song from England and they talk a little different than we do. If this confused you try watching Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch or Green Street Hooligans (Known as Green Street in the UK.) There's lots of English slang in those movies for you to ponder. And oh by the way, what's wrong with West Virginia and Tennessee. To the people that mentioned that the grasshopper is the name of a pub, that makes perfect sense. I guess it's not slang after all. Cheers
As for the question, well is sounds like he wants to go for a pint, or is having a drink and spending his pennies. I prefer my ENGLISH SLANG. Basic? Oh yeah, very base.
I used to live in Amsterdam and I'm pretty sure Grasshopper was a "coffee shop", i.e. he was spending his guilders on dope not booze.
Ok. Only point about grassshopper being a Dutch coffee shop would be it isn't necessarily English slang, rather Dutch slang/colloquial language. Again, all I wanted was to write some crap down.
Correctomundo... The Grasshopper is indeed a coffeeshop in Amsterdam, a shithole lager lout tourist coffeeshop with rubbish overpriced dope at that... Prior to 2002 the currency of the Netherlands was Guilders so he was having a smoke...
Well then Bingo. The grasshopper is a coffeeshop. I just ASSUMED it was some sort of Cockney slang. Remember I posted the question to start with. Being American, but knowing many people from London, Blackpool, Newcastle, Inverness and Edinburgh, I know more British slang than most americans. Plus, I've been to London 4 times, and been around the island. But, still sometimes, I may need some more instruction from people that live on the island and can tell me what's up when I get a bit confused. I've had guilders in my wallet, that was not part of the question. I was asking just about the grasshopper, that is a bar. This question has been answered. I also mentioned Marlons, what is a marlon? That is a drink. These questions have been answered, let the thread die.
