A Day in the Life of Joe Middle-Class Republican Joe gets up at 6:00 AM to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot with good, clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised. All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan. Because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast -- bacon and eggs this day. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry. Joe takes his morning shower, reaching for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount that is contains because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and the breakdown of its contents. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree-hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor. Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer meets these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he'll get worker's compensation or an unemployment check because some liberal didn't think he should loose his home to temporary misfortune. It's noon time. Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression. Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification (those rural Republican's would still be sitting in the dark). Joe is happy to see his dad, who is now retired. Joe's dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to. After his visit with dad, Joe gets back in his car for the ride home. He turns on a radio talk show. The host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees, "We don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives. After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have." In the years to come, Joe's life will change dramatically. The U.S. dollar will be devalued as a result of our huge deficit, our living standards demolished, our standing with the world diminished and our social security gone...all because some conservative republican made sure he could take care of himself and his buddies. Aghast, i remain... © MichaelMoore.com, All Rights Reserved i like micheal moore. he is nice. he is an asshole but he is funny and can articulate my feelings/political opinion in a clever way. he is funny... i think he would agree with the irony in having a control freak play power trips in the political forum...what other forum has such rules? that slipped... haha i think this article is true...what do you think? please comment before lock down.
Yes, Moore is great at peddling big-government propaganda, pretending to be a guy who's out for the underdog. He's my hero.
well, this country is not based on capitalism... it's based on socialistic capitalism.... id really like to see someone who bitches about socialisum be down and out one day.....
well, then i read you wrong. i agree... i guess i wasnt sure what you meant by "minor" since that is relative.
Good post! I like Moore, I can't stand how people hold disdain for him because he has been successful and has money. That does not make him any less concerned for the little man.
I thought the beauty of America was that what ever we (the majority) say there is a place for, there is a place for. I should have figured differently when the majority of us didn't get the president we voted for 4 years ago. Great post. I was glad to see what spawned the stupid typical liberals day post.
Good stuff. I think it's funny how conservatives bitch about big government and taxes, when in all reality they pay less in taxes than they would if taxes were cut and they had to pay full price on all their luxuries. I'd love to see the look on their faces if that happened. "What, I have to pay 5 dollars a gallon for gas?" "I have to pay 200 dollars for my annual physical?" "my medicine contains arsenic?" (yeah I made up the numbers) There is a dark side to the progressives/liberals: they are the ones who moved for drug and alcohol prohibitions. The bastards.
Yes what exactly are 'minor' funding policies? Socialize: To place under government or group ownership or control; establish on a socialistic basis. National Defense? Intelligence? Police Protection? Fire Protection? Medicare? Education? Social Security? Well there's 90% of the budget. I am nopt sure how minor these are, and if you disagree that these should be socialized programs, then how you intend to provide these services?
you know, i don't really think joe is any of my business. ok, i lean pretty far to the left. i'll admit i lean very far to the left. i can't stand bush or the destruction and death his policies have caused. but if we're going to micro-focus right down to joe and all the conveniences he has because of liberals...well, i like to think that somewhere joe has a sister. joe's sister is very different from joe - perhaps she's a bit of an embarrassment to their rather conservative family, she supports totally different causes and lives by totally different values. we could call them polar opposites. but i like to think, because i have a tendency to indulge in irrational fantasies, that joe and his sister still manage, somehow, to get along, because, in spite of their differences, both of them are smart enough to realize that they are still family and they are still americans. joe's always thought his sister was a little "out there" and she's always thought he was a little thick, but whatcha gonna do? red states, blue states...it's sad to see our nation so divided. in another thread someone mentions two guys fighting at the polls, their hands on each others throat. all this talk about voter intimidation. siblings not speaking to each other - yeah, i was disowned by my brother, my TWIN brother. we're going through all this, for what? to "elect" our "leaders"? give me a fucking break! it's not goddamn worth it, man. as a people we are, by our very natures, opinionated and stubborn, and often very vocal about shit we know little about. everyone's going to have different ideas about what's "right" and the best way to do things - i'm not talking about bush or kerry, now, i'm still referring to joe and his sister. i mean, they're really who makes up america, right? they may strongly disagree, and they both vote their conscience, but do they strengthen america by fighting about it themselves? i say let the politicians fight over it, they're the professional assholes. i don't like the GOP and i hate bush, and actually, i have no opinion whatsoever either way of michael moore. but nonetheless, i have this wild, idealistic vision that's probably proof of my insanity, that someday - perhaps in the very distant (or not) future, maybe after the polar ice caps have melted and the oil's all gone and we're all huddling around fires in our caves in the second ice age - that, at least on the level of the joes and their sisters, it will matter less if we are democrat or republican or liberal or conservative or right or wrong or christian or godless tree-worshipping pagan, because we'll still all be americans anyway. but then, like i said, i'm prone to indulgent fantasies, and i also believe in unicorns, dragons and faeries.
what, you mean the part about americans getting along, or my wild irrational fantasies being proof of my insanity? aw, you fiscal conservatives are always such tightwads, when are you gonna buy me that beer? (j/k)
Re: kitty_fabulous I think you can blame Dubya for the extreme divide in this country as well as the anger. He was anything but a uniter. He did extreme things...the war especially. I mean, when people are dying needlessly, I expect people to be angry. I have relatives and a friend in Iraq. That is the main source of my anger, that and the desruction of the environment. Not to mention 9/11, which I hold Bush responsible for. I don't think this is hatred stemming from partisanship, it is a reaction to Bush's actions. Then again, look how republicans hated Clinton, and why? I still don't quite know. Anyways, I'm not a Democrat and I hate Bush. My parents adore Bush. My dad and I get into heated discussions about politics, it is frustrating, but I get most frustrated by his approach, which is the typical republican debate approach, to never let you get a word in and basically yell. My mom doesn't want to argue so we don't discuss politics much at all. They get their "news" from Fox and Rush Limbaugh. Anyways, we all get along, I have friends who are republicans. I think the trouble only starts with strangers. If I see a Bush sign, I think "#*)$*&# you!!!" But I wouldn't think that of my family or friends.
Of course Dubya is the main reason for the country being divided. He's been a horrible president. But I don't think the left is exactly doing much to close the divide, either. left-wing polemics like Michael Moore are doing nothing other than furthering the divide in this country. Of course the same thing can be said for a so-called "right-wing", Republican Party mouthpiece like Rush Limbaugh as well. Moore and Limbaugh are very much alike in the fact that they appeal to two different extremes. Both are very biased and not always truthful, and both fuel much of the political tension that is not only dividing, but destroying, this country. Both, also, of course, make a lot of money for what they do, and are very much puppets for the media monopolies they are a part of. Neither are people I would take too seriously. At this point in time, the only people who seem to make any sense in this country are the independents, libertarians and traditional conservatives, who are free of the painfully superficial Democrat and Republican biases that are causing people to not see the big picture. The problem this country is facing truly transcends the two-party paradigm so many people have readily and gullibly bought into. I bet if people could see the way our government really operates, there would be no Democrats or Republicans. Everyone would simply be equally pissed off, and for the same exact reasons. This would spawn a revolution and we might actually begin to see a real change in how our government is run. There is a huge problem with misinformation in this country, thanks to the government-owned, government-controlled mass-media. It's only going to get worse, too.
