As much as I hate to admit it, I joined an internet dating site. I chatted and PM'd some folks, and after not too long I realized they were following almost what could be called a script. I did manage to talk to somebody else there that was thinking the same thing. I've been online long enough to know how young guys act, and this was screaming "not right" to me. It seems like they wanted to keep you online as long as possible. I'm thinking they're trying to troll PC's for lucrative digits, you know credit card and online banking stuff. Identity theft. The american boys are probably just in it for gadget and porno money, some the of the questions the foreign fellas were asking me had my bullshit meter pinned, and I had the sinking feeling that some of this may being funnelled back into terrorism.
I'm not really sure how to proceed because my hippie ethics have always taught me Thou Shalt Not Call THE MAN Unless Somebody Is Dying or About To. I emailed a computer forensics cat from another board who said I should contact the FBI. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than talk to an agent. Not only that, if I'm wrong my name goes in the file marked 'Crackpot' along with the zombies rule belgium and tinfoil helmet cases.
WTF should I do? I gotta bad feeling about all this BUT....

As much as a few people would like to be "cool" on the internet... That mode of operation is greatly hindered by the amount of people who are assholes or predators.

It's like pissing in the ocean, thank God we can always hit the back button or re-direct the address bar.

I'm glad your "bullshit meter" is in working order.

I wandered back to the other forum, from which I pm'd the computer forensics dude... An Agent (or claiming to be) was checking out my profile  This forum is a completely different ballgame than this one, people just don't randomly check out other folks' profiles.

ya know, if I play my cards right, this could be downright amusing. I'll just have to think carefully on how I word THAT particular PM :p
that is, of course, unless I come to my senses* and realize that teasing the tiger is generally a bad idea.

    *naaaah -that never happens

Perhaps an anonymous tip from a pay phone...
That way you can't be tracked.

I just called my husband (studying Police Foundations), and he suggests contacting an anti-fraud watch dog group. He says that they are not necessarily related to the police but often have the ability to investigate a claim and escalate it appropriately.

    http://www.onguardonline.gov/file-complaint.aspx

This location has some advice for narcing on different types of fraudsters... I don't think that one does the escalation for you. I will keep looking.

    Oh, here...
    https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

The FTC seems to suggest that it won't deal with individual things (i.e., get the millions for you promised to you by the Nigerian Prince who just needs to hide money with you for a few months etc.), but they will investigate patters and potential problems...
    I think...

I don't know the FTC's reputation in the US...
Is it more or less trustable than the FBI?

    Thanks Ma! :D
what to do with the nigerian prince's is pretty obvious, but some of these cats were much more subtle. What really chaps my ass is that they're preying on women, probably knowing full well that once a gal puts her heart (or other parts) towards something she's not thinking clearly. They were so good at telling me what they thought I wanted to hear it made me go- huh? naaaaaah

I was on a site way back that had a guy from Balochistan constantly writing soaring love poems to this Chinese-Canadian women, and only to her. As you may or may not know, Balochistan is the part of Pakistan that has a separatist movement-their have been a series of bombings etc. He was obviously well-educated, and was hoping to word-surf his way into Canada via love connection...Don't know how all that turned out as I quit the site!

well.... glad Bush is out, but i'm pretty sure Barrack, as lovely as he may seem, and he may BE lovely, don't know enough about the man as yet, is just another part of the bigger agenda... i'm pretty sure they wouldn't allow it otherwise... Oh well... it's their karma they are fuckin' with, not mine... only i can do that!

My advice is simply not to look. Be yourself... discuss what you know and share your passions with a wider audience and the right person will be attracted to who you really are, not the person you're trying to project while looking for a mate. Purposeful attempts to match up too often has people looking to impress and inadvertently adopting a persona they assume a prospective mate is looking for. It is an unintended dishonesty that dooms "connections" when one or the other party grows tired of putting up the pretense of being the "ideal" person and reverts back to being him or herself. Don't put yourself "out there" as that often will reek of desperation.

The best advice I can think of is learn how to be happy by yourself and you'll be truly ready to be part of a positive relationship. Your ideal match will more than likely NOT come from a dating site.

Actually, I am OK by myself, more than most folks it seems, but a playmate would be the icing on the cupcake. I thought availing myself to a target-rich environment would help speed up that process ;)
my main concern here was hackers and and their possible relationship to terrorism, I dropped that whole dating site thing like it was hot, and chalked it up to experience. Thank you for your input stinkfoot, appreciated

and yes lillallyloukins, Obama does seem lovely, that man can just fill the room, but what exactly he's filling it with we're not sure.
    cheers babe :cheers2:
