Have you ever gone your entire life having a certain thing you want to do with it, and when you're taking college classes; working as a janitor; sitting behind a computer; running in an election; you just know -- it burns at your soul - that the one thing is what you're just meant to do, but doing it would jeopardize you're living?

Basically, you know that one passion of yours is the thing you just have to do with your life and if you don't, you'll feel it's a waste, but it's risky.

I'm at the point in my life where I feel this way with music. The one thing I want to do in my life is write music, but trying to take that path can prove unpromising.

I'm high right now, if this didn't make any sense - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Well, my cousin goes to university for music.

But like, it's not just about singing or playing piano or guitar. Music programs are really hard. You have to learn like 4 different instruments a year, learn music theory and be able to write, play, perform, practice, learn, deliver material, jam with people, produce creative pieces, master classics, etc.

From what I've seen - there is a huge turn around. Like, at least half of the people in the music program drop out at third year.

If that's what you're passionate about, then it's what you should do, even if it seems unpromising. Afterall, no matter what you do, nothing is ever promised. You don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow or if you'll even make it to tomorrow, so you may as well do what makes you happy:)

My brother has no post-secondary education on the other hand, and he's produced two albums so far and has gone on tour twice out to BC and back with his band. They win local competitions and are getting a bit of radio time.

I have another friend who adores music, but she knew that her voice wouldn't carry her to somewhere she could make a living from it - so she went into music management and does this double major in information tech and music production. She wants to work a record label and produce songs.

What kind of music do you want to make?

I've taken music courses in college. I've played piano my entire life, guitar, drums, flute. Give me an instrument, and I can write something on it. I know this sounds like something every teenage boy would say, but I feel like I'm supposed to be on stage, touring with a band - particulary a Rock/Jazz/Blues/Blugerass/Improv/Jam band. A few things stopping me is the inability to find respectable, talented musicians in my area, the uncertainty, and the turnaround rate.

Poker, which could be a dangerous path to follow.

It's all I look forward to. And I'm practicing.

    Can you play lead guitar?

Decent bands will often put out advertisements when they are looking for a bandmate. So, all you may have to do is look for a band.

Do you guys use kijiji in the USA?

I won't say I play lead guitar, but I can get around on a guitar and do what I want with it, mostly - so, maybe I can play...idk. lol Piano/Keys are definitely my forte though.

Most of the bands around here are crappy metal bands, which I'm not into. I'm looking to do some Beatles/Grateful Dead/Phish/Floyd jam type stuff, just finding talented people who want to do the same and want to actually try to get it somewhere - that's hard, at least in my area.

I feel the same way Joey, I played violin and piano through jr high and high school and practice on my own time in college yet I'm an IT major so soon my career path will go in a totally different direction from music. Yet I'm interested in both fields, I figure I'll still play every now and then I like to have diversity in my interests.

Also I would like to travel, we have this whole globe to explore and I feel it would be a waste as an open minded person to stay in one place all of my life. I like experience new places so hopefully I can find programs and or a job that would allow me to gain credit from education/work in different countries.

Follow your dreams. Every reasonable person in the world tried to talk me out of all of my insane dreams for every logical reason in the world, but if you have a dream and don't follow it, eventually it will eat you up inside. As a fellow dream chaser I should warn you that in chasing dreams you may have to sacrifice some comforts that you may be used to in life, but living the dream, whatever it is, is totally worth it. I'm a writer, so I've had to take a vow of poverty pretty much in order to do what I do, I could make a hell of a lot more money with my degree in journalism by getting into public relations but would the extra pay be worth the misery?

If you want it bad enough, you'll find a way to make it work and you'll be surprisingly much happier in life once you're on the path that you are meant to be on. Or at least that was my experience. When you're on the right path, things will just happen and you'll know the signs when you see them along the way.

Thanks for the input. It's great that you followed your dream. You're exactly right -- taking a risk in being able to live my dream isn't worth a promising life of misery. I've written many, many, many songs, and I've only had a few songs that I've really taken a lot of pride in and thought were great, but recently, I've just had so much inspiration to write more and I'm starting to get some stuff out, even if it's just a bit here and there, that I'm really starting to like.

I don't have anybody that is very musically inclined. I have friends who play instruments, but I wouldn't go as far as to saying they are inclined or would be able to do what I want to do. I've had thoughts of writing and playing a demo CD of about 3 or 4 songs - completely written and performed by myself of ambient, improv, rock, jazz type stuff. Maybe I'll get to working on it soon.

I better get me some weed, invest in beanbag chairs and mood lighting - to help the creative ambiance - maybe it could be a tax write off

I've realized that none of my hopes or dreams are ever going to come true, so I just try to stay happy with what I have.
