Psychopaths make up about 1% of the population but can be be found in larger proportions is certain fields & occupations. Have you ever met a Psychopath/Sociopath,do you think you may have one as a friend,co worker or family member? Whats been your experience?

This vid may help define the condition.

My boss at work shows exactly the same behaviour.

I didn't know it to be so well defined disorder.
    The vid was informative.

Thanks. Now my anger has been replaced by pity for him.

Nice post LB. I hope that this thread can be as non-judgemental as possible given that Psychopaths CAN indulge in anti social & harmfull behavior. My hope is that we can share experiences of those who know people who have this disorder- but also from psychopaths themselves!

Its about gaining understanding I hope.

I spent long months on a blog forum for psycopaths. I thought a man I'd been in a long relationship with might have been one. He wasn't. I learned about psychopathy first-hand from the psychopaths.

I believe my current boss is fairly far on the psychopathy scale . . . she is extremely manipulative to everyone around her in unethical ways and is a shockingly frequent compulsive liar. She also only seems to care about herself and her emotions always seem very forced and fake.

I am a sociopath. Not the same thing, I know, but there you have it.

People in places of power, especially corporate business people, are known to be psychopaths, Mr. Writer.

    just as a note,
if someone has only few of these it doesn't necessarly mean that he is a psychopath

being diagnosed with anti-social behavioural problems dose'nt necesssarilly make you a sociopath.the main difference between a psycopath and a sociopath is that psycopaths are born psycopaths genetically.its hereditary.whereas sociopathic type behavioural traits are influenced mainly by a persons individual enviromental surroundings.

My understanding was that psycho & Sociopathy are the same thing maelstrom ,though Ive not heard of the difference in definition that roamy mentions it kinda makes sense. The manifestations the same tho'.

Ive met maybe 3 people in my life whom I suspect were psychopaths but theres one,a family member, whom Im almost certain would 'score' highly.

Thing to remember is that we are all on the Psychopathy scale somewhere just as we're all on the Autistic scale as they say. And,obviously, it has nothing to do with intelligence.

    {sorry about the bold type above,not intended}

Depending on your definition, this seems unlikely.

A sociopath is one who is affected with a personality disorder marked by antisocial behavior. A psychopath is a person with an antisocial personality disorder, manifested in aggressive, perverted, criminal, or amoral behavior without empathy or remorse. The two might sound the same to some, however the differences between sociopaths and psychopaths are very real.

Watched a couple dozen of the vids. The mentally ill, anti social behaviour and serious psychopathy are fascinating subjects and I'm sure most if not all of us have met or been around people with the first two. I have, especially narciscistic people. One hopes never to run into the third type under conditions that favor their prediliction for destruction without conscience. Wrong place--wrong time=luck of the draw. Last thing I say to my kids and grand kids EVERY time they are going somewhere is "keep your eyes open". They know what I mean. The irony of my feelings that killing is wrong ,manifests toward the child killers because I would have no trouble killing them myself.

How so? I had heard that it was 4% of population some years ago. More recent literiture puts it at just under 1% (Hare & Dutton). Also Bob Hare describes Sociopaths & Psychopaths as being the same.

I followed maelstroms link, read the comparisons but still fail to see a significant difference, given that the respective descriptions are indeed differently worded, they can be interpreted to mean the same disorder.

Thanks Aerianne I followed your link Watched a couple of the videos, again Psycologists are say that Sociopath/Psychopath are interchangable terms meaning the same thing. One guy makes the point that diagnosis is highly open to interpretation of personality types & degrees of disorder (whichever you wana call it). The key similarities seem to be a lack of 'natural' empathy & compassion, selfishness, manipulative behavior, a tendency toward irresponsibility, ect, for both terms.

roamys point is interesting in that it separates genetic (inherited) & environmental causes as separate factors for the two disorders. I'm not saying anyone is wrong here-its a complex subject & seems that there may be many strains of thought that can be followed.
