why is it so hard to find good falafel? i've never made it from scratch, is it really hard?? good falafel is fucking amazing, one of the best foods there is. but the stuff you make from a box is absolutely disgusting. so dry, hard, crunchy beyond belief. some restaraunts get it right, and its incredible. but i went to a pita place in a nice little town once, and it was really tough, dry, and dense, and shaped like a hocky puck, and they were premade and microwaved them before they made the food they were in and tonight they had falafel at the cafeteria...it wasnt as bad as that one restaraunt, and also better than the box mix, but it wasn't good. it was TOO soft, moist, and mushy in the middle. the middle of them were like mashed potatoes in consistancy almost. is it really that hard to make?? like i said, i've never made it myself from scratch, so i have no real frame of reference, but i'd be sad if something so amazing was really so hard to make
I have never had good falafel in the States, I have never had bad Falafel in Israel. Make it yourself. Even the mix they sell at Kroger and stores like that is not that bad.
I have a recipe from the vegetarian times magazines. From what I remember it doesnt seem too dificult to make and I think I even thought about making them and if I thought that is because the recipe seemed simple. Now if I ever make them, I'll let you know how it went.
go to pita pit!! Thats where I get delicious falafel. Do you like baba ganoush? Im eating it with whole grain tostitos atm...amazing
i will need to try it out, if my campus access account is accepted there. otherwise i will save my money and eat other things:Angel_anim:
I love babaganoush. I would always buy some at the store and get pita chips and have that as a snack.
that stuff is pretty freaking awesome. i should look up a recipe, but i like hummus better anyway
Yes, only one brand... Osem, which is imported from Israel to begin with. But yet again, it's nothing like making it yourself... Falafel is not about the falafel itself though, it's about the mixture in the pita. You should have a lot of pickled and spiced veggies and stuff, some humus and tehina, and so on and forth.
once when my boy friend was drunk he said wanna suck on my flafel sausage... instead of kielbasa... i giggled
ok, i havent seen that at kroger or any of the other stores i have seen falafel mix. the stuff we've gotten in the past ends up dry as hell (except the oil) and crunchy all the way through, and devoid of real flavor. i've been to some restaraunts where its moist and delicious, and almost but not quite green in the middle...those places it's great....the stuff from the boxes i've tried though, are no good i'll keep an eye out for osem, thanks!
You could always order it online, but ehh....shipping costs and shit... dunno if you want to spend the extra 5$. I've cooked some generic mixes for friends on drunken nights and they were never THAT bad... but... yet again... they could have been a million times better. Bad thing with Falafel is that it's pretty damn easy to deep fry it too much or too little.
I wanna try baked falafels. I think I saw a recipe for that somewhere and I had a friend who used to make them. Maybe the one in the magazine is for baked falafels. I dont wanna go look.
i'm sure thats often the problem, but i'd still like to learn to make it from scratch i think the last stuff i tried was ziyad? lemme look it up
yep. and the patties fell apart in the oil, and what held together came out dark brown, overcooked all the way through and crunchy as hell and retained tons of oil....it was no good
That looks funky. Making it from scratch is not hard, but getting the right ingredients ain't that easy either, especially if you're not in a city with ethnic food stores and stuff... especially good thina. There are lots of "easy" falafel recipes on the internet though... I just looked as some and they look really easy to make.
