I am fasting as we speak. From 11 pm last night until 10:30 tonight (with my insulin resistance, I have to eat once inbetween fasts) then again tomorrow. It definitely helps with spiritual growth.

Myself, I can see no spiritual value in fasting. But it may help to shed excess weight, and remove toxins from the body. Too much of it though could probably lead to serious health cosequences.

I don't see excessive fasting as the best spiritual practice for health reasons, but there are those who say it's helpful. Still, at 14, I would wait a few years before going a month on only juice, if what I understand you to have said is correct. I've gone about 25 hours without food or water and it's no big deal, but a month on only juice for a 14 year old seems unhealthy. Is that the way the diet works or is there more to it?

Fasting is terrible for your health, by the way. After a day or so your body starts breaking down lean muscle for energy, it's not just fat you lose. In many ways it wreaks havoc with the body. Think about it, the body is supposed to eat, it needs energy to maintain a good level of health and fitness.

Besides, I look at this holisticly: if you aren't tending to the body's needs, how can the spirit's needs be met fully?

Short fasts may have their place, but I don't see the point in these long ones, unless your goal is to ruin your body.

A long fast like that is putting great stress on your body. An occasional short fast (a couple days) can be healthy by getting impurities out. But your body is a machine, a delicate machine, and it needs fuel to function properly. You can't tell me that fasting is healthy and good, when all it does is put stress on body, where you lose fat and muscle tissue, your brain doesn't function right, all parts are affected. Man may not live by bread alone, but he does live by bread in part! Food is necessary!

That is great to hear! Many people do not understand the importance of fasting in relation to spiritual growth in the Lord.

Fasting is a very useful spiritual tool, if used right. Merely refraining from food is useless. During a fast, time must be spent in silence, in contemplation and meditation and prayer. Otherwise it has no spiritual value.

I dont know about fasts as long as 40 days, but I do know that fasts of upto a week are used very effectively in ayurveda and naturotherapy in India and I know they work very very well.

The spiritual purpose of a fast is to detach from all things material completely. The most basic material need of the body is food. To deny it even that, to turn away completely from the external and focus on the internal is the purpose of a fast.

This may be difficult to do on a total fast (no food or water or anything) so you work up to that. First you fast at one meal a day. Then maybe only fruit juice. Then onl;y water. Thus work up to the total fast.

If the body is not eating but the mind is always thinking of food then the fast is USELESS.
