A timely topic since the Booker Prize winner has just been announced. The daughter of Anita Desei no less. It took her eight years to write her winning novel, which is making me feel a lot better about having taken a year over mine so far. So... Who are your favourite authors?
Definately Dean Koontz! I read From the Corner of His Eye recently, and his horror stories have always been so much more than just scary.. Full of depth and understanding.. I like Graham Masterton for pretty much the same reason.. His non-horror epics are as fine as the contempory works we all admire..
Haven't returned for a while but Isaac Asimov was/is a favourite, and also in the past Richard Bach made an impression. Read more factual stuff nowadays and wouldn't bother to remember who wrote what.
Kurt Vonnegut Douglas Adams Hunter S. Thompson Irvine Welsh Patricia Cornwell James Patterson Tom Clancy (just picked up one of his and loved it)
Not yet, Nay. You read any of the ones I listed? I have seen Bernard Cornwell a few times when looking for Patricia Cornwell books down at the boot sales (I think I've got ALL of hers now). I'm not sure what kind of books he writes though. I got into this James Patterson/Patricia Cornwell myster/thriller thing for awhile, and they were all I was reading. I could easily finish a book in a couple of days or one night of insomnia. ;-) If you try any Bernard Cornwell let me know what he's like. I just got into Tom Clancy, and picked up a Robert Ludlum book as well, but haven't read that one yet. I love cheap books at the boot sales ... but alas, that season is ending soon. *sigh* Nothing like getting some good reads for 20-50p.
Kurt Vonnegut stands at the top of the tree for me. To be honest I haven't read tonnes so the list is kinda limited. But from what I have read, these other fellows certainly deserve a mention; George Orwell, Leonard Cohen & Hunter S. Thompson. To recommend a read by each: Vonnegut: Cats Cradel - Slaughterhouse 5 Orwell: Animal Farm - 1984 Cohen: Beautiful Losers Thompson:...(What else!): Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Aye, will let ya know. From what I gather he writes a wee bit like Clavell, but obviously on totally different things. I think I'll start with "Stonehenge"
Yeah, I recogonized the whole Vonnegut referance in your screen name there. ;-) I love Cats Cradle, Slaughterhouse Five, as well as Breakfast of Champions. However, I'd say my favorite Vonnegut reads have been Galapagos, Player Piano, and Bluebeard. If you haven't read them yet ... check them out.
