I try to watch a couple of new films every week (new as in I haven't seen them before...) This thread is for you to recommend any interesting films you may have seen lately that you think others should know about, whether on TV, DVD, at the cinema, anything that's coming up on telly or coming out soon...

I'll start with "Dead Man's Shoes", a 2004 British drama from Warp Films. (The same people that are behind Warp records; Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada etc.) It's low key but incredibly well done, set in the North of England and about a soldier who returns home to get revenge on the bunch of mates who torment his mentally disabled brother. Lots of great druggy scenes and a fantastic soundtrack. I didn't expect this to be as good...

Aww man, 'Dead Man's Shoes' is brilliant isn't it? :D
    Hmm, lemme think...

Did many of you see 'Amelie'? That's wonderful stuff.

And to throw another in for good measure, I watched 'The King of Comedy' recently, Scorsese and De Niro...What more do I need to say? :)

Haha, there's a guy at work looks just like Richard from Dead Man's Shoes! It's weird, I kinda wanna talk to him as Richard seemed canny (you know, if he didn't have business to take care of), but the guy at work seems scarier for some reason. It's bizarre.

Paddy Considine's performance was just incredible ... but yeah, I'd stear clear if you're working with Richard...or at least hide any blunt axes that may be lying around...

Rabbit Proof Fence is an amazing and very touching film of the real life story of three half-Aborigine girls who are abducted following the Australian government's policy of repatriating 'half-caste' children to breed the Aborigine out of them. They escape the Australian repatriation centres and trek thousands of miles across the country to find their families....

Twin Town and Dead Man's Shoes are both brilliant, yeah. If totally different. Love the small-town-ness of them both though. And the soundtracks..!

    "Waking Life"

Directed by Richard Linklater and uses the same animation style that was used in his latest film "A Scanner Darkly".

It's about this kid who arrives in a town and travels round listening to what people think about life, the universe and philosophy in general. Then in the second part of the film it's more about dreams as this kid feels he's stuck in a dream and can't wake up.

Looks amazing with the animation over live action. And obviously it's pretty thought-provoking!

Saw one a few months ago that was hidden away in Blockbuster somewhere so obviously wasn't very popular... but I liked it - Hard Candy

If I were you, I'd read the book "Unna You Fullas". It's much better.

I watched Children of Men last week, I'd recommend it, a British film from last year with Clive Owen, Michael Caine, Julianne Moore set in a future Britain in 2027 where all women have become infertile (based on a PD James book). Some great startling moments of violence and some good ideas!
