Heii, this is my first post.
Ive wanted dreads for at least 4 years.
But my dad did NOT let that happen. I wasnt sure if it was him being embarassed of me already (Black sheep of the family sorta thing).
But he later went on to tell me he was worried about me getting a job with them. It was sweet that he was worried.
But i just didnt feel right. Some people say theyre born blondes. Well i was born to have dreads. It just feels right. Im sure some of you know what i mean.

Anyways, i plan on going over to my grandmas and having my mom help me.

As of right now. I have Jet black hair, that changes alot in length.
The back of my hair is probably at least 20 inches. It reaches the back of my bra strap . In the front its probably shoulder length at the shortest.
I have VERY fine, straight Scandinavian hair. Which worried me before, but after really creeping on this forum, i felt alot better.

The only thing im semi worried about is my hair being black.
I love my black hair, but im kinda bummed, thinking that you wont even be able to tell i have dreads with such dark hair.
And im kinda going back and forth on bleaching them after they mature. But i LOVE black dreads on all the people ive seen them on (Wednesday 13 being my favorite)
Oh well, ill worry about it when the time comes.

I plan on doing the Twist and Rip, and i feel confident about this method for my hair.
If i wear my hair down for two days without brushing at all . I can actually feel a dread start (obviously not a mature dread, but you know what i mean)
My hair LOVES to knot up. So im excited.

Ill be washing my hair one a week, maybe more if i notice it get icky.
as of right now i wash my hair once a week if not even longer (im a little grunger lol)
My hair type gets oily semi fast, by the third day its creepy.
But i started to wear my hair up for weeks on end without ever touching it.

Which i think is good for having dreads, because obviously im not to interactive with my hair.

Will wearing my new dreads up at school (8 hours) be bad? id take them down soon as i get home, and i wouldn't wear them up every day.

Anyways , im excited as you can tell!

A little bit about myself before i go :)

    Obviously a girl.
I live in the frozen state of Minnesota !
I have six cats, a dog , rabbit and three snakes (Purple Albino Reticulated Python, BCI Red Tail and a Jet Black Blood Python (Short Tail)
I LOVE Metal, 80s metal, Black metal. Doom and Stoner Metal are my FAVORITE though.

    Sorry for the long post!!!

Here is a picture of me! I hope i end up looking decent with them. What do you think?

    heyyyyyyyyyyylo! welcome :)

sounds like you got all bases covered! dont worry about them being black, i think dark dreads are awesome :D also, from my own experience, you dont wanna continually/repeatedly bleach dreads. i have a lot of missing dread ends (ie, bits that have gotten caught and ripped off, and i firmly believe that it was the constant dying, bleaching and redying that did this!!)

washing once a week is fine, but you dont need to wash the actual dreads - just make sure your scalp is clean & happy! the soapy water will run through your dreadlings and clean them enough anyway

Frizz goes hand in hand with dreads, I'm afraid! Especially when you do it without crocheting or wax (which is the best way)

I had no idea I had so much hair.
I have about 30, I'm happy with the sizes of the dreads, My hair was so thin, I thought they were gonna be thin.

I got a lot of fuzzy going on. Lol. I feel silly.

Doing the sides is really hard
I have to back comb the root to get them started or they won't even do shit.

So I back combed the roots to get started, and rip and twist, little back comb to fluff it up, then on I go.

I cannot wait till they flatten down a little. Lol.

How long did it take yall personally for them to settle down and become "at home"?

They will shrink and be much thinner and quite hard.

    Frizz is forever.

    Churrrch! Haha

I'm coming up on my 3 year and there's still shit all over the place! If they all laid down all perfectly you'd get bored with them. Embrace that first few months! Its the shit, next 6 months are awesome too.

This is a badass time for you! Take lots of pictures. Wait for loooops and all kindsa weirndess. Your gonna have an interesting noggin.:afro:

They'll get flat and round and short and tight and loose and frizzy and....different! That's the best part.

frizz - completely normal and wont go away unless you crochet, roll, wax, aloe, gel, glue it down. embrace it! the first 6 months to a year is really the best. i actually want to get rid of my current dreads just for that crazy period again!

pain - yep, normal. youre pulling on the scalp, doing things you wouldnt normally do to it. maybe massage it (rub it with finger tips) or something

backcombing should always start at the root ;)

re lying down dreads.. a few months. headbands and hairgrips are really your friend :D

    Half way done.
I knew they took forever. But this seems crazy long.
They are hard and seem very tight. Obviously not locked, abut I mean for babies they seem very hard.

With back coming and twist and rip, it takes anywhere from and hour or more, is it cus my hairs semi long?

Whatever, I'm getting there. I feel silly. Cannot wait till I get the front ones done

takes about 40 mins to and hour for each dread.
I back comb to start them and do it every do often between rip and twist. The rip and twist doesn't stay well unless I nap up the hair.

I got 11 more to go.
The very top of my head and side (ouch)

My hair shorten about half, from my brain strap to my shoulder.

    It's weird sleeping on them.

I can't wait till they mature enough to have a little weight and hold themselves down.

It's not side show Bob hair, but they are standing lol

    All done.
    Have 36.
I had thin, fine ass hair. And now it's thick as hell and I got some decently thick dreads in some places.
