Gene Cranick is not a citizen of the city that the fire department in question belongs to.

lol..this one admits the fire was started in barrels

the guy should have at least been able to extinguish a fire if he planned on starting one

start a forest fire in my area and you can guarantee that if they trace it back to you ...you WILL be charged for the manpower and resources for putting it out

nice video available in that link if you can find it...they interview the guy

I thought it was funny when he mentioned the insurance coverage was low...I wonder if he offered to upgrade his coverage after the fire and try to collect more

$75 is a perfectly reasonable fee to have a firefighting crew from a different neighboring city to come out to a RURAL area who does not have their own fire station...do you really think these peoples puny rural taxes go to the other cities budget...no...their taxes go to their county for the services their county provides

theyre lucky to have the $75 protection OPTION...the key word is option

also the guys grandson started the fire by burning garbage in a barrel....Im surprised more people arent after him for leaving the dogs and cat in the house...ok the grass is on fire and then it travels to the house

I mean how hard is it to open the door and let the dogs out?

    So...

This guy lives in a rural area that voted not to fund their own fire department with their own taxes...

    So...

They struck a deal that residents could opt in to the neighboring cities fire protection for a measly $75 dollars a year.

    And..

For this measly $75/year, they receive 24 hours response from a team of professional medics/firefighters/engineers/exspensive equipment who will risk their lives to save your house and your family.

    But...
This guy didn't respect the firefighters effort, necesity, or heroism enough to buy into the protection.

    And now...
The fire department is the asshole for being unwilling to risk their lives and spend their resources saving a house that the owner did not value enough to pay $75/year.

    Makes total sense to me.

No fire department is obligated to fight ANY fire. They will not do it if its outside their jurisdiction and if its too dangerous. If there's a good chance firefighter will get injured hosing down your house, you better believe they'll sit outside and watch it burn. Its the way it should be.

One problem with certain people in America is the lack of responsibility. This guy didn't pay to protect his house, didn't have a responsible trash burn, and, yet, he expects someone else to fix it.

    Crazy

i understand and actually agree with both sides to this... everything the guy in the movie said i agree with but on the other side i have a little story to tell. me and my lady did donation collection for a volunteer fire department. i dont know if these people are also covered by the city fire department but what i DO know is that we got fired from the job because people werent giving us enough money. there were tons of people who just refused to give shit. and we had alot of 5 dollar donations too. it was supposed to be 40 dollars per household. these people are bastards. they wont pay you shit and slam the door on you for a volunteer fire department saying "no money" when they have 3 cars in the yard... ok i have no money and i have no cars... theyre fucking liars and if i were a firefighter for that fire department i would make a humongous shitlist of all those greedy assholes and i wouldnt do shit for their house. just like they didnt do shit for my fire department. because when you refuse to pay youre also affecting everyone who DID pay... the fire department is that much LESS equipped for the ppl who did pay... not to mention making me and my wife even more fucking poor than we already are... we get a percentage of the money we collect and they obviously dont give a shit about us making a living and trying to responsibly pull our selves out of the hole were in (opposed to drug sales or something equally as unsavory) so i say fuck those people.

Whether or not these firefighters wanted to help, the equipment does not belong to them, they can't just steal it and go be heroes whenever they want...this isn't the movies.

Buddy didn't pay for service. He knew the risks involved. And why didn't he let his dogs out?

It's not just money, they could've lost their jobs if they went out to fight it.

Or what if they did go out to fight it, and because of that, some fire in their jurisdiction didn't get proper attention?

If I don't get health insurance, it's not the hospital's fault if they can't treat me.

perhaps it doesn't apply in this case

but there is don't, and can't

for example, i would have trouble getting $75 together at any time, so i guess it'd be okay if my house burned down

fortunately i live in a place where people still pay taxes, which help everyone, regardless of circumstances

as far as the hospital goes, i'm basically fucked in the u$$a
