My teacher told us, that soon we were going to have a debate about flag buring. Personally I could care less if someone does it, but I'd like to hear a little more about either side. Anyone?
The greatest thing about America is freedom of speech. That's precisely why flag-burning should be banned.
I don't care for "my" or any country, and neither for "my" or any country's flag. I think setting flags alight is a fun and relatively safe and peaceful way of symbolising the need for a world undivided by country borders.
Flag burning is a way to express yourself; therefore part of speech, and so it shouldn't be banned, if you claim America is great b/c of free speech. Peace & love
not again, I remember when this debate came around last time. Its just a piece of cloth, and the true crime is a bunch of elected officials wasting time debating such trivial nonsense.
There was a group of Congressmen in the 80s that was proposing a Constitutional amendment that prohibited burning the U.S. flag. They even had an all day and night vigil on the 4th of July. Their plan went nowhere. I don't really know what legal basis you could use in an argument against burning a flag. The Congressmen were saying to the effect that there was something unique about the flag and therefore it should not be burned. I think your teacher should have a debate about a more general topic.
Not only is it part of free speech, but more specifically, it's about freedom of political expression. If they make that illegal, we're ALL doomed. Besides, rabid nationalism is very dangerous, and it's good to have some outlets where it's not required to be a flag-waving idiot all the time. Nationalism is scary, like a nation-wide egotism. You have to have escapes from such hallucinations.
Many flags are made of petroleum products and give of toxic fumes when burned. The health and safety of others should be considered when excersicing one's rights. Don't burn it! COMPOST the flag as a protest of....?? HEY?, what are folks protesting when they burn a flag? Its a very strong image, but not a very clear message. If burning the flag demonstrates disagreement with the government's actions, doesn't that buy into the notion that America is its government rather than its people?
When most people talk about a country doing this or that, they mean the country's government doing this or that. The flag, though a symbol for the country as a whole, tends to be associated with the government. Most people don't hate an entire country of people, except for the notable exception of everyone hating Israel and all the people that live there. Anyways, the flag represents whatever the burner thinks is bad. If he's against our foreign policy, it's the government. If he's against our abortion rights, gay rights, etc, then its the general culture. It probably depends on the situation.
I think the funniest thing and best show of poetic justice I ever saw was a video on Rotten of a teen-age boy in Montana pouring gasoline all over an American flag only to light himself on fire Flag burning is not only stupid (and I love fire) but just plain wrong. The flag is not only a symbol of the country but of freedom, people burn a flag representing freedom and then bitch about how people should be free to burn flags, isn't that just a little ironic and illogical? Anyone that supports flag burning should die a slow, painful, firey death.
maybe that flag may mean freedom to you, but to many others, it has a much more negative meaning attached to it. such as, the explotation of third world countries, war crimes, and greed. put yourself in other peoples shoes before you judge. "self appointed judges judge/ more than they have sold/ if she burns then she is not/ a witch like we thought/ a down payment on another/ one of saleems lots" peace & love
was/nt the earth created for everyone to explore and live in peace without barriers being erected ?. ie countries " i mean who decided to say this is our country and these flags or whatever are our flags? . this attitude to me is another form of oppression. agree with stickchick24 on this one . ,............i think the best flag to burn is the nazi one ./ peace/ ............
Flagburning is the greatest means to protest American policies. I fully support but i myself have no reason too and fail to see any need too.
No, saying the flag stands for freedom and then trying to outlaw something like burning the flag is ironic and illogical. I don't believe the flag stands for freedom. It stands for corruption, bigotry and war, and instead of burning the actual government, which would be much better but also less feasible, burning a flag is a reasonable way to show you oppose that.
