how many of you out there like flms from abroad? i honestly cant get enough of em, though mostly im watching those that belong in the horror genre. i find it the cultural differences in what is considered scary very interesting. My favorite countrys movies has to be japan. theres just something about how mysterious their films are, how they never really explain whats going on and just leave you with a sense of "what the hell just happened" when the movies done. recently, i had lost faith in the frenchs ability to make horror movies, after seeing the worst movie i have ever experienced, les revenants. Fortunately, last night i finally got around to seeing haute tension (i beleive it was released here as high tension), and it was great. i highly recomend you see this movie One thing id really like to see is an indian horror movie. I wonder if it would have all the singing and dancing like most indian movies. that would be interesting (hehe, dancing zombies is always a good thing). Anyone know any good indian horrors? anyway, what country do you enjoy movies from most? and what genre?
oh, hehe, i guess foreign people add a whole new dimension to this post if youre not from north america, where are you from, and can you recommend any good movies from there (especially the horror kind)
its funny cuz im unable to find any french horror movie that really worked or was good (imo). its the first time i hear of "haute tension", so i googled it and yea apparently its a good horror movie.. i am french and i would like to defend france, but as far as movies are concerned (and in particular fantastic/horror movies), we suck. not cuz we dont have good plots, we just dont have a big movie industry, no producer wants to give money for a horror movie here.. so our directors and authors go to the US to have their movies done.
well, i dont think i was being fair to judge all french movies because on that one. however horrible it is. now you say that you dont know of any good french horror moves. how about bad french horror movies? sometimes, especially within the horror genre, a movie can be so bad its good.
oh believe me, sometimes bad movies are just bad movies, horror or not.. i can think of "Saint-Ange" with Virginie Ledoyen and Lou Doillon, thats a bit like The Others but hahaha it sucked so bad.. however im not sure u'd consider it a horror movie.. and then "Promenons nous dans les bois", thats a like a thriller Scream style, i mean with a killer that butchers everybody in this big creepy castle. it was lame too. i dunno.. i really cant think of good french scary movies
French movies rule.. I'm French Check out Jean-Luc Godart if you like old movies... and French new-wave films. As far as modern movies go.. well there's plenty of them I could recommend, the most recent being Love Me If You Dare, which you can find in new releases in any video store here in the states. Or at least, in Jersey... I don't know about anywhere else.
I disagree there's plenty of French movie (more than 80% of those that have been made and that are being made) that are filmed in France, and that are just as good as a huge commercial Hollywood production, if not not better, we don't need Hollywood... plus independant films (whether they're from New York or Paris) are better.. they talk to more evolved people.
I read about Haute Tension online months before it was ever even heard of by the general public in the U.S. and decided to try to find a copy online and low and behold, I was lucky enough to get it. Before viewing it I realized that it paid a huge homage to a lot of classic horror films, yet it blew me away!!! It was just so intense! I love how Alexendre Aja used the old school horror formulas to make you think that you knew what was about to happen, but then just swerved you by not letting the obvious jump out (hence the bathroom scene). The gore was just crazy, and lucky for me I didnt have to suffer through the some what toned down U.S. version. IMO, a horror masterpiece that was way past due for us horror fans. Now, as for the Japanese horror films, those movies are just down right crazy!!! Ju-On was far more creepy than the U.S. version (The Grudge), Ringu I found more atmospheric and had a darker mood than The Ring, and if any of you are into the Japanese films, I highly recommend Premonition and H. Premonition drew me into the story line so much, and that is rare for a film to do that to me these days. And H, well, that movie was so insane you'd have to see it for yourself. Oldboy is another great movie thats getting a U.S. re-make, filming starts in '06, IMO, it doesnt need to be redone. Anybody who has seen it knows what I'm saying. But if you want to go for some balls to the wall action/gore with a great story line, Ichi the Killer is at the top of my list. Ive yet to see The Eye 1 & 2 (cant find one anywhere yet) and I'am currently looking into purchasing Gozu. Any other recommendations would be great!
i love foreign films wish i could see more of them though i recently saw a beautiful spanish film, called the grandfather. just lovely. made cry.
I used to watch a good number of foreign films, but now I've kind of fallen off that habit. I miss it.
I love French cinema, as well as Godard I'm a big fan of Eric Rohmer. Recently re-watched the Trois Couleurs trilogy - made by Kieslowski, a Polish director, but made in France / French, so I think they count Also recently been getting into films by Aki Kaurismaki, a great quirky Finnish director - I've heard him and his brother Mika described as the Finnish Coen brothers, and I don't think that's a bad description.
I realized going into this film that it was not going to be a straight bio-pic about Rimbaud's life so that loosened my expectations for the movie a bit, which is good considering had I expected a life story I would've been sorely disappointed. This film is more about Rimbaud's rocky relationship with fellow poet, Verlaine, whom he falls in love with and subsequently about Verlaine being stuck between a rock and a hard place with Rimbaud on one side and his beautiful but ultimately empty headed wife, Mathilde on the other. The set/costume design was done well enough; not enough to win awards but enough to make the time and place believable. What stands out the most, though, is the acting and of course the wonderful violin heavy score. DiCaprio gives an inspired performance as the young, opinionated, Rimbaud as does Thewlis in his role as the older poet, Verlaine who takes him under his wing. You won't get a complete round view of either man or his life here, but what you will get is a story about love, madness, writing and the search for meaning. If you like what you see of Rimbaud from this movie, I would whole heartedly recommend his work to you and any and all written biographies as they will shed even more light on a truly great poet's life.
