Free Speech Here? a debate about flaming

...i feel this site is largely self policed by us[we?] members....if some new member posts a questionable thread we are pretty quick to flame them the fuck out of here

some of you will never get this..most of you do......i believe Skip gets it....he would not want one of those 'girl disappears'' stories to start out with''they met on a site called hip forums.com''

If someone can't stand the collective overbearing views of us druggies, atheists and granola crunching hippies, there are still plenty of other forums on the interwebs for said someone to participate in.

And as samstoned stated, he was flamed pretty hard, but since he never went anywhere, I think it just gives him a little more recognition on the site. There's a big difference between cyberbullying a kid who is looking for advice, and trolling some weirdo who likes to talk about getting caught masturbating at work.

From my short time here, usually if someone is getting flamed its because they said something really stupid. I like our little community, and think its pretty well policed.

 

...good point sam...i too survived a few attempts..thats how i became know as 'epic douchebag',by another member...BUT...the flaming can put a new member in line and make them aware that there IS regular members reading all their shite......

ok here's something I wanted to put in. Free speech is not free bashing - it means everybody can speak their mind without getting disrupted, flamed, bashed, lit up, you name it.

Basically means you still gotta respect the guidelines - and most of you do - and I think it's not that difficult.

To keep a (less or more) self regulated community alive and growing, new members should be welcomed without chasing them through the mincer. You always can ignore a post you dislike.

I've been banned from the chat room multiple times, not for using bad language, not for harassing anyone or threats, but just because the moderator at the time did not agree with my view point.

Free speech indeed!

Some have been very obvious. When a first post is something like an ad or some sort of far out sexual story about incest or what not. There's also been ones that tell you how you can earn $1000 today in 5 minutes.

Some of the ones that are a bit harder to tell are the hardcore religious ones. There's been people come here who start talking about saving people and demons and absolution, telling other members that if they don't repent they'll burn in hell.

In any community in any form where the people care about each other there will always be some form of comradery and a slight leaning of biased towards new "outsiders". The whole point though (in my opinion) of a place like hip forums is that there's a place for everyone, considering it is very large and has many forums within. If a new poster (whether trolling or not) is never given the chance to stick around long enough to find their place due to badgering, flaming, etc. then it sort of defeats the purpose of an open place like hip forums. It can certainly take away from its open-minded attitude.

I've seen people write before something to the effect of, "For a place that's supposed to be open minded you people sure are judgemental" and then the person left. It's the people that make the place, not the other way around. I think that's true on and offline.

I believe the little red and white yield sign for reporting what you think is spam or a troll was given for that reason. Probably to at least cut down on the flaming an insults. Everytime a person opens their mouth (or writes something) we get a clearer look at them and who they're talking to.

I barely understand what 'trolling' is, let alone 'flaming'. I was born before 'netiquette' was invented. Please don't make this difficult for me. Got enough "shadow people" to deal with as it is.

I look at Hipforums as a microcommunity, and as such you do get the whole range of people here. It is naive of someone to think that everybody here is a stereotypical "flowers in thier hair, it's all peace and love" hippie.
Those are usually the ones that get offended and leave whenever they discover it's an internet forum and not a commune.

 

Very true. I typically have respect for a poster who sticks around after getting flamed, I hate when people can't admit they are wrong or can't laugh at themselves. And usually they are flamed for a decent reason, otherwise I'd say something about it if I see it happening.

 

There is this little thought-tool I use to get by when flammed on the internet.

By calling Hip Forums a "Free Speech Community" Skip and all those who help run Hip Forums have taken the risk of having that label be questioned. If I call myself an open minded person I am automatically putting myself at risk of being proved wrong when I finally slip up and say something closed minded.

It's the people of the free speech community that have to prove the label of the community they chose to join. One doesn't come here and join because it's a "Satan Worshipping community", they join because it's a "Free Speech community." When they join and find out it's a community full of people who are willing to insult them or shit on their beliefs or actions (there was a member who had sex with dogs that comes to mind), then the result of them being misled by "Free speech community" falls on Skip and the others who run it as they're the ones who have a vested interest and have taken that risk.

It would be like inviting someone over to stay at your house, then when they get there your family treats them like shit and they leave. Then they turn around to someone else and call you a fake asshole who pretends to be nice. So who's reputation is ruined. Not your family's. Yours.

The members here are responsible for the reputation of the site.

 

I dont remember if I was flamed here when I first got here or not, I do know my intro was a little weird. but yet I am still here, and if anyone offends me, or is insulting, I really dont let it affect me anymore.
