Future military action in Pakistan

We have seen in the past few weeks an increase in US military involvement in Pakistan. Increased missile attacks by drones, cross-border raids by US special ops, etc... This is the start of a necessary campaign that has been on the back burner for 7 years.

One thing for certain is that next president is going to have to deal with the Pakistain front, and it is likely that the US is not going to have the full cooperation of the Pak government. Because of his cooperation with the US, Musharraf was known in country as a stooge. Zardari is also in fear of being labeled as such. It is clear that the demands by the US are in direct conflict with the requirements to sustain the support of the Pak population.

We could only wish to have the political climate we had in Afghanistan when it comes to dealing with al Qaeda. Not only are we dealing with a nuclear power, but a volatile country that is "friendly" to the US. That, coupled with al Qaeda's sanctuary in the tribal regions, practicall defines this situation as "worst case scenario".

This issue has not been in the spotlight in relation to issues such as the economy, energy, or lipstick, but it is just as important nonetheless. Obama has stated publicly for over a year that the US needs to take an offensive in Pakistan, whether the Pak government permits it or not. I agree with his position 100%. McCain has seemed to focus more on Iraq, while only recently speaking out regarding military action in Pakistan.

What do you see as the threat, and how do you propose it should be handled?

In my opinion, unfortunately, these important decisions have become more difficult to make in light of the enormous strain the Iraq war has put on the US. But these are decisions that cannot be ignored, and the difficulty only stresses the importance to make the right decisons.

You don't need to post a link, I acknowleged that fact in the first sentence of my first post. And ground operations have not been "just recently" ordered, they have been publicly known for several weeks, covert operations have been going on for months.

You've been around long enough to know that I do, so what's your point? I don't care about what the CIA and the ISI did 20 years ago. Outside of unproven conspiracy theories, what relevance does that have?

 

It's amazing knowing what we know about THIS government here in our own country, that you are losing sleep over what's going on over in Pakistan. I mean, give me a break already. The question for you is, when does this government ever tell the truth about anything, and what makes you so sure that they give a damn about protecting you anyway? Most likely, anyone in that region who was involved in the planning of the 9/11 attack is long gone. They've had more than twenty five hundred days in which to get out of there. But if it's dead and foreign-looking, it will satisfy Joe Sixpack.

Where would they have gone? FATA is one of the very few areas in the world where some of these high profile targets have sanctuary. Infiltration into these areas is extremely difficult, and eyes in the sky can only tell you so much.

In the FATA they are virtually free from Pak government control, protected by tribal codes, located in one of the most difficult inhabited terrains on the planet, have military support of regrouped Taliban.

Several members of the 2006 "Airline Plot" were trained in explosives in the FATA. It is believed that AQ foothold in this region has grown stronger in the past two years.

The Pak Army has recently stated that they have engaged in fierce battles with an enemy that had superior weapons, superior communication, and had shown surprising organization in their tactics.

I don't think they are trying to "hide" in these areas, as they surely know that we know where they are. But they are smart enough to know that it is to their advantage to draw their enemy to them.
